I think what I've heard repeated most often is that the production crew was basically a mess and was flailing like crazy to get filming done and not knowing how the fuck to do anything because the show was very different from the other programming they were used to and RTD and the producers didn't really know how to schedule or budget a sci-fi drama since it was the first time they ever did it (they blew way more of the budget than they expected on The End of the World, I think).

By all accounts, things smoothed over after the first season - never heard any production complaints during the Tennant years. However, from what I've read, it seems that sometime around season 6 or 7, with all the scheduling delays and whatnot and Moffat splitting his time between Sherlock and DW, production started getting pretty troubled again.

I believe that part of the reason DW did one Doctor- and/or companion-lite episode a season for a few years was because the crew didn't have enough time or resources to shoot 13 episodes and a Christmas special on a 13-episode schedule. So once they figured out how to do stuff like that to write around the filming logistics, the environment got better. I've also heard it implied that Tennant was easier to work with than Eccleston on account of not having any big career at stake, but don't quote me on that.

Chris E also felt there was a lot of bullying on the set, and he stood up for some people he felt were being bullied. I wouldn't be surprised if that is the case, he seems like an earnest sort of bloke who would worry about those things.

na - deets on this, please? I'm intrigued.

AYRT I only read about it on one of the articles linked to, maybe on here? Or on one of the LJ comms. It was an appearance he did where he was quite open about his time on DW, and I remember the thing about the bullying culture, and I think he felt bad for some of the lower status colleagues on set. Problem is I'm being vague because I remember reading it, but it was a couple of years ago, so can't remember the detail.

I wouldn't be surprised to be honest, I always feel RTD comes across as very pompous and you can imagine there could have been quite a ruthless atmosphere around the set, and I often wonder with things like television whether people put up with a lot of shit because they are desperate to work in that industry.

I never though about it, but now that I did I can see it happening and if he did stand up for someone, that's very good and I'm pleased to know that. I'll try digging around the interwebz to find the article. Thank you for replying.
