I LOVE when people make covers and stuff by hand and then use a photo of that for stuff. There have been a couple of secrets here that were handmade and they were the best. Go for it!

On the one hand, I'd like to see your Rookiemag-style covers. It sounds like a cool idea.

On the other hand, does it really matter if you don't do everything the other graphic makers are doing, as long as the cover is pretty? You said so yourself, most people can't even tell there is a "crafting process" just by looking at the final product. As long as you turn out something that looks decent, it's fine. The most attention I've ever given a fanmix cover, even a particularly pretty one, is a brief, "Hey, that looks nice."

I love making fanmixes but dread having to do the cover art. And I'm so inept at photoshop I often don't even understand Step 1 when I go to look at a tutorial, LOL. I have often considered just doing an actual three-dimensional thing and scanning it.

I don't see anything wrong with doing it by hand, if that's how you feel more comfortable.

If you really want an extra-pretty Photoshop job, though, you could always ask someone to do it for you. Post up a request on Tumblr or a comm or something, someone'll bite.

I say make them by hand for now (they will be awesome and stand out from other fanmixes! go for it!), and in the meantime get some stress-free Photoshop practicing for fun.

Photosheep is really *not* that easy, and so don't beat yourself up over it. I've used it for years and it still screws with me sometimes. I didn't help that every time they updated the damn thing, they changed it all around and made it impossible to find stuff.

Do what makes you happy, and just keep plugging away at PS - you'll figure it out.

I am the opposite - I am terrible about compiling fanmixes (even though I have a ridiculous amount of music and lots of feels) but I wish I had more stuff to shop. I can't make gifs or animated graphics but no one seems to care about stationary manips anymore.

That's what I do. It's really fun and people on my flist liked the one I posted the other day, so I say go for it. You might be surprised at the response. :)
