I'm not familiar with this series, but that's pretty much how I felt about War Of The Worlds. Not even the inclusion of Adrian Paul could save it, and that's saying a lot.

Drifting off topic...

Huh...my watching of the show was sporadic, so I didn't realize they'd killed off Drake.... (But when I tried to remember that happening, I realized he was played by the same actor as Charlie on Highlander. This amuses me more than it should. I also discover, upon searching to confirm that, that they changed the aliens...I had not realized that.)

Happy someone knew what I was talking about!

Yeah, they killed off both Norton and Paul (my personal favorite). The series as a whole changed dramatically, as well -- it just wasn't the same.

And yeah, he also played Charlie on Highlander! Stuff like that amuses me too~

DA

I remember the show too, I used to watch it religiously (hah). Don't shoot me, OP, I actually liked The Second Wave better. But I was way heavy into cyberpunk at the time, and there was nothing else on TV remotely cyberpunk except Max Headroom (which aired on cable, which we didn't have at the time), so I took what I could get.

I enjoyed WotW a LOT despite, obviously, not being able to watch it as often as I'd like. I did see season 2...I just somehow missed that the missing characters were dead, instead of just not around for the episodes I saw. (Or that the Morthrai weren't the same as the Mor-Taxans.) Heh.

Just because a show doesn't have a "duty" to be inclusive doesn't mean it's not a dickbag decision when people limit casting to whites only.

A citizen of a country only has a duty to obey the laws of the country - doesn't mean they can't be giant boil on the ass of society while still doing that "duty".

(Anonymous) 2013-06-10 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry, were you sitting in on the meetings were they all said "hey! Let's make white casting above all others a priority!" No? Then shut this "decision to limit casting" bullshit.

Nothing to add except my DVR hiccuped and I lost all of the recordings of this show, having only had a chance to see the first three. :(

*waits for repeats*

I'm actually more annoyed with this confession than this show. Seriously, a show can't be just as good with more poc? Oh, why can't poc just settle with having to identify with either one-dimensional stereotypes or with white characters?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-11 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
You've misinterpreted the secret so you can feel insulted.

They're not saying that they think a show is better without poc or that those people are or aren't under represented, they're only saying that it's not a standard by which they set a show's quality on.

If anything they're completely neutral on the subject, judging the show only on other qualities, not on race. Not participating in an argument doesn't automatically side you with the bad guys. Switzerland being neutral didn't make it a Nazi state, for instance.

I don't see how Amador's death could have been avoided. If anything, it showed his character: he's pretty much a jerk to women but when it comes to his country, he's loyal and serves it well. But what was Philip supposed to do? If they ran his ID, he'd be discovered. If Amador asked Martha about Philip, it would expose him.

Gregory's death was avoidable. How did they NOT find the ring when they swept the car?

Also, I think someone's killed every episode, even Zhukov died. It's probably safe to say that Vasili Nikolaevich is dead. Each death has impacted the course the show has taken. If not for Amador's death, Nina wouldn't have lost Vladimir and convinced her to confess. Without Gregory's death, the FBI wouldn't have been satisfied and Elizabeth probably wouldn't have reconciled with Philip (but I still think this death was avoidable). Sometimes for the plot to move on, people have to die, and in a non paranormal show, the main characters can't be the ones to die.

I thought the parenthetical implied OP was talking more about Amador as a *person* when it came to an avoidable death, not the machinations required to make the show work. And from that perspective, yeah. Amador could have not died if he hadn't been all up in "Clark's" face for sleeping with Martha. Because he was there, essentially, stalking her, not because he had a line on the Philip.

And I'm a little torn on the ICness of it. I mean, yeah, Amador made rash, hot-headed decisions but, one come-on aside, he always seemed more interested in the general "pussy" and less the Martha-specific variety. (BTW, I just made the Martha-Clark "Superman" connection and kind of want to vomit a bit.)

But really, I didn't care a ton about Amador, nor am I super in love with Stan, but I'm a sucker for "teammate in peril" stories, and Stan just wandering around like a lost puppy trying to find Amador absolutely made my day. I loved that.

Agreed that many people died in the show and mostly for plot-necessary reasons. To me, the "bringing it on themselves" with these two deaths just reiterated the underlying theme of the futility and inevitability of the Cold War/P&E's missions.

Would also like to point out to the OP that Nina (a part-Indian actress) and Viola (an African-American actress who appeared in two eps to Derek Luke's three) not only both survived the season, they also showed great growth and power in their storylines. How about giving the ladies some love and credit?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-11 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
It doesn't bother me that their aren't a lot of poc because of the time period same reason their aren't a lot woman in power positions. But I have to agree with you OP because I didn't like the way the couple non-white people's deaths were treated.

"Lose my shit" "Do do" and "duty" just made me laugh. Nice bit of wordplay, OP. Or it's possible I'm just 12.
