I kinda like Hiccup being in Hufflepuff... Their creed is to love and accept people for who they are, right? To see past social stigmas and judge a person on their own merits? When all the other Hogwarts founders were looking for certain virtues and bloodlines and whatnot, didn't Helga Hufflepuff merely say, "I'll take the lot and treat them just the same"? That's VERY much "Hiccup" to me. Yes, he's very smart and likes to figure things out just like a Ravenclaw, but I think Hiccup excels when he's trying to understand dragons--not just how they work, but their wants and their needs, and how he can balance those needs to make sure that everyone can live and work together harmoniously. That's a cornerstone of the Hufflepuff house, and so I actually kind of love putting him in Hufflepuff over Ravenclaw.

I also love seeing Rapunzel in Ravenclaw! Yes, leaving her tower took a lot of bravery, but notice that she didn't leave her tower until she could do so in an intelligent, (relatively) safe manner. She didn't go storming off into the woods with nothing but her wits the way a Gryffindor (like Merida) would, she brought a GUIDE. She had a PLAN. All things considered, she was pretty intelligent about it! Also, before Rapunzel left her tower, her life consisted entirely of hobbies and intellectual pursuits. At the beginning of the movie she actually says that she LIKES it in her tower! So... I can definitely see her as a Ravenclaw. Maybe she doesn't as overtly "study" things the way Hiccup does, but she IS very smart and obviously loves to learn new things. Personally, I think the "Big Four" sorting of Merida in Gryffindor, Jack into Slytherin, Hiccup into Hufflepuff and Rapunzel in Ravenclaw works really well!

Didn't she pretty much teach herself astronomy, and that's how she knew those lights (the lanterns) were unusual?

AYRT: Oh hells YEAH she did. I only meant (and failed to properly communicate--my apologies) that we, the audience, don't get to actively SEE Rapunzel "study" things to way we get to see Hiccup study and learn. All of Rapunzel's intellectual pursuits are merely implied with the opening montage (we get to see her read, what, THREE books?) but a lot of the plot of HTTYD centers around Hiccup actively studying dragons and literally going to school. So in that respect, at least, I can understand why some people would see Hiccup, not Rapunzel, as more of a traditional "bookworm" Ravenclaw; his studies simply get more screentime than hers. But you're absolutely right, Rapunzel TAUGHT HERSELF ASTROLOGY. For FUN. That's seriously AMAZING. I adore her as a Ravenclaw!

Great point about their different approaches to learning. I think you meant "astronomy" not "astrology" though. But hey, who knows? Maybe Rapunzel ascribed superficial meanings to the movements of the stars in an attempt to predict the future.

You've sold me on Ravenclaw Rapunzel, but I think this is partially because I want to see how she'd get on with Luna. XD

One of the saddest things about the movie is the 're-read the books' line.

Because that seems to imply she has half a shelf, maybe, and she's so desperate for reading material that she reads those same books over and over again every day.

At first I though, well, surely Gothel brings her new ones occasionally...

But then I realized that given the docile and manipulated state she wanted to keep Rapunzel in, it makes perfect sense that she wouldn't want her exposed to a wide range of stories or viewpoints.

As though I needed another reason to hate the character.
