(Anonymous) 2013-06-10 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)My understanding is that they are volunteers who work with AO3 to clean up the tags and put similar tags together so they can be searched all at once.
But because some people tag things over there in such a rambling fashion, the job of a tag wrangler is a bit...difficult. To say the least.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-10 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)tags are supposed to be for characters, pairings, genres, types of alternate universe, subgenres, formatting style of the fic (oneshot, multichaptered, etc.), etc., but some people use them a la tumblr; for example:
Tags:
John/Max, Alice, high school AU, coffee fueled fic, unbetaed, aren't they the cutest
etc. etc.
wranglers would take out the "coffee fueled fic" and "aren't they the cutest", and possibly merge "John/Max" with the kinda official "John Smith/Max Power" tag to make things easier
