I agree so hard.

The atmosphere of bending backwards to give people unrestricted freedom in tags is just leading to a bloated anarchy. Which is sad, because in theory tags are such an awesome way to search

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2013-06-10 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not a tag wrangler and I know very little of how the system actually works -- but, as a writer who tries to use the tags, I agree. They frustrate the hell out of me on a regular basis.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-10 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
The tagging system there is beyond messed up. I really appreciate what all the wranglers are trying to do but I just think at this point it's a lost cause. The lack of restrictions or rules has just caused a mess and it's not going to get better any time soon.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-10 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not surprised you're disillusioned wrangling tags on AO3. The tags system looks a mess, with some authors throwing in a billion stupid Tumblr-style tags all over the place.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-10 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
AO3 should just add an 'other tags' section that doesn't get tag wrangled.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-10 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I keep hearing this phrase bandied about and I'm still not entirely sure what it means?

I do not envy your job.

Seriously, the only solution is to either:

a) just give up to keep with the "free" spirit and stop wasting everyone's time, or

b) impose, say, a week-long suspension on those who grossly misuse tags. You'll get cries of "wah wah you're all nazis, my freedom speech, wah wah", but you'll bring peace and order.

I have to admit I'm really confused by AO3 tagging because the fact that people are wrangling tags implies there is a correct/preferred way that posters should be tagging, but as a poster I have absolutely no idea what that is. So then it seems weird to be told that people are screwing things up by using tags wrong, when no one will explain the 'right' way and it's all kind of a mess.

I always feel so damn sorry for tag wranglers because of the way Tumblr-style commenting in tags has infiltrated and taken over. It can't be easy even without that, honestly, when you take into account things like pairings that sometimes have twenty different names, and characters who go by different names in canon, the long or short form of certain kinks or triggers, and so on. Then you add all the pointless bullshit and...yecht. I wouldn't have the patience for it, so kudos to you for even trying anon.

I don't envy your job, OP. But I really appreciate the efforts of the tag wranglers, and I know there are many of us that do.

That said, if you need a break on it, take a break. If you don't want to go back to it, it's ok. Though, what should be done is just (as it was said) lay down the law and ban all the tumblr-style tags.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-11 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
You poor things. I can't imagine I'd have the patience for that. You do good work though.

As a writer, I've struggled sometimes not having a list I can refer back to when I'm tagging. Generally I type a few variations in the "Other tags" bar and wait until one that fits pops up in the drop-down list so at least I know it's used by other people.

I think it would be easier (on our end) if you had a "searchable tags" list that was public so writers would know what tags you wanted us to use. It would probably end up being horribly complicated with all the fandom-specific tags and any kind of policing would cause wank.

I just... want to make your job less awful by not contributing to the mess.

Seriously, the tags are why I don't use AO3. Of course this means I've barely read any fic at all since SVU Fiction closed, but so be it; it's impossible to find anything over there. When I sit down to read some fic, I don't expect to spend half an hour wading through pointless bullshit just to get to want I want.

I didn't know there were tag wranglers on AO3 :o Thanks for your work!

Anyway, I just ignore fics with rambling tags like the plague.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-11 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
I work in a library. This is what I do as a day job. It's a normalized job, and we still suffer from all the vices you mentioned here. It's really hard work, and to be honest, I wouldn't do it as a hobby (it's a back-breaking job, and let's face it, most people don't care/don't even know why we do it, organize data for easy recovery I mean). Also, I cry just to imagine the hell you must endure with the millions of possible variations you must found everyday.

Let me salute you, because what you do is hardly recognized, but it's also quite important for fandom in general. *hugs*

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-06-11 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
I wonder what would happen if you put a reminder by the tag form saying, "This is not Tumblr." :P

But in all seriousness, OP, I feel so sorry for you. I do hope things get better in there!

Not gonna lie, some days I consider volunteering to be a tag wrangler just out of sheer frustration with AO3 tags. Can anyone tell me what it's like to be an AO3 tag-wrangler?

Would anybody be so nice and send me an invitation? If it's not too troublesome of course?

D'you think it'd help any if users of the Archive got together to send messages about it? :|a
