I don't know if this is specifically a fashion trend, but I feel like a way larger proportion of clothes being sold are see-through today than they were five years ago. Like, even the ones that don't seem specifically meant for layering. Just t-shirts and shit. I don't know why this is OK to sell all of a sudden. I JUST WANT AN OPAQUE SHIRT IS THAT SO MUCH TO ASK.

There's a trend to wear like a colored bra or something under those floofy-type transparent shirts

What the actual fuck. Now we're not supposed to pretend we don't wear underwear? Why don't I get the fucking memos?

I think it's partly because the general quality of women's clothing has gone to shit. Almost all fabrics are see-through and it's pretty hard to find any decent clothing that will last a couple of washes without breaking down.

Exactly. Sometimes I buy mens' clothes because it's actually still made with the expectation that they wearer will be a human, who does stuff and wears underwear and needs to wash the clothes every now and then. Women's clothes are meant for mannequins or catalog models, not people. Everything is so thin and cheap and see-through and obviously made only with looks in mind, never practicality.

You get what you pay for. Vintage often lasts longer than the newer stuff, and that's buying it used, too.

DA--yeah. I grew up poor and buying everything but shoes and undies used, but now that so many well off people who can afford to buy new are into 'vintage' clothing, my poor ass often ends up picking through mostly old disintegrating stuff from Target and Walmart at thrift shops. I hate choosing between food or rent or medical care, and having clothes made out of something other than polyester and tissue paper.

It doesn't help that more of the general volume of clothing produced is made to be disposable rather than sturdy now. It feels like even the middle and upper class buy shoddy clothes because that's the only option, because that's all I can find at Goodwill. Rich people's discards used to be worth more than poor people's new clothes, but not anymore. I don't fucking care if it's this week's hot new trend, give me clothing that will last five-ten years and can still be given to charity when I'm done with it, especially after it's been mended and dyed. Hell, most everything's got polyester in it these days, so it won't take dye. The number of ugly colored, stained, faded outfits I got complemented on after I was through dyeing them, and now... blah.

The vintage-because-it's-trendy crowd combine their secondhand finds with designer whatever and sew their own dresses out of pillowcases, as though everyone who doesn't want to spend money they don't have on something that'll fall apart in the wash has the skill and time to sew a new wardrobe. I swear it's the same people saying everyone who doesn't want to live on canned everything and ramen should shop for organic heirloom vegetables at farmers' markets and grow the other half of what they eat on a 6x10' north-facing balcony.

Poor, doomed-to-Walmart-cast-offs anon is bitter. Er--sorry.

It's a marketing play posing as a trend. It's so you have to pile on shirts, therefore, spending more money at the store to get the same coverage you would have gotten from a shirt a few years back.

And, yeah, I hate it too.

This drives me up the wall.

K-mart. Seriously. I buy all my clothes there. The quality's not bad, the prices are excellent and they have opaque tops galore.
