I don't think this is an uncommon sentiment. "I liked it before it was cool" is kind of a common feeling, I think.

I know how you feel, though. I like a lot of underground JPop groups, and there's something nice about being the only real English fan of a couple of them. It kind of makes you feel a bit special, even if you want the thing to get more fans. I was a fan of a group right when they didn't have that many English-speaking fans (Momoiro Clover, now Momoiro Clover Z) and they've since become one of the biggest pop groups in Japan. On the one hand it's great they've grown so much and people recognize how great they are, but on the other hand I feel like the tight-knit community is completely gone.
