multishippers are annoying, period. they're so holier-than-thou about their shipping preferences that it made me go from indifferent to "fuck off".

(Anonymous) 2013-06-11 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Those are my exact feelings about people with OTPs.

+1

at least multishippers won't throw tantrums if you talk about a pairing other than their otp.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 10:25 am (UTC)(link)
+1 They think they're hot shit for liking more than one pairing or going 'LOLZ 3SUM!!!" when really, multishipping doesn't make them special or better than OTPers. Yet it's multishippers and gen fanatics constantly crowing about how dumb and dramatic OTPers are and why can't more writers cater to them.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 11:06 am (UTC)(link)
And yet I've encountered OTPers who think multishippers aren't real fans for some reason, and even some who tell multishippers that they will stop multishipping once they meet the love of their life, because surely multishipping is just a symptom of not really knowing what it's like to be in love?

Just as multishipping doesn't make you special, OTPing doesn't make you special either. There are people on both sides who really need to get over themselves.

Agree. Plus, they too often act all holier-than-thou (as some of the most nasty and dismissive comments in this thread show), apparently thinking it shows how tolerant they are. Which is not actually the case since most multi-shippers simply ship more than one pairing, but not all. And they are just as intolerant of pairings that are not to their liking. Just like liking threesomes doesn't make one more tolerant since I notice such fans are just as likely to react with 'OMG, het cooties!' or whatever type of pairing or kink they do not like as other fans.

As for universally tolerant fans (as opposed to multi-shippers)? They are far too often fans who are not overly emotionally invested in the fandom. For instance, I am completely open-minded when it comes to Buffy pairings and I can therefore read and feel enthusiastic about all Buffy pairing, het and slash. I do have a few pairings preferences, but none that I feel passionate about: I care more about the plot and the writing style etc. than about the pairings when I read Buffy fic. Or the characterization for that matter. Not being familiar with canon, OOC is fine with me provided the story is well-written, internally consistent and has interestingly complex characters.

Ooops, anon above

And just to clarify, no, I do not consider myself to be a Buffy fan.

Basically, if I am not emotionally over-invested in a fandom, I am simply a reader grazing fic, not a fan. Reading in a fandom or belonging to a comm does not a fan make.

For our oh-so-emotionally-healthy friends who don't get the OP's secret irritation, fan is short for 'fanatic', not 'logical person'. If you are being logical about it, you clearly are not in a position to understand the point she is making. And don't start acting all offended and discriminated against as if she had started a flame war against multi-shippers in the comm in question - she is venting discreetly about it in the appropriate forum, not running off said multi-shippers with tar and feathers.

Let's have a bit more live-and-let-live around here, including for OTPers, OK?

Sorry, but I think that a few of the answers to this secret are being downright nasty - which is not necessary, as I note that a handful of replies do not sympathize but are being civilized about it, kudos to them.
