I see it both ways, OP. Yes, it is petty, but for someone to say "it doesn't matter if AB ship gets sunk to me because I get as much pleasure out of AD and AZ!" is a little like saying "sucks to be you, your enjoyment in this fandom has been decreased while mine has stayed roughly the same!"

I understand the feeling, OP. Ideally we could keep the AB ship at the focus of the AB comm, and enjoy what there is to enjoy of it regardless of canon. I think it underscores the importance of diversifying your fandom portfolio - not that you have to start multishipping, but so that having your OTP sunk a fandom doesn't have to feel like The End of the World, because there are other fandoms, and other pairings to love.
