Not at all a bad reason. He tattooed the equivalent of a swastika or an inverted cross on himself.

fiction <------------------------------> reality

I was going to say this. A fake evil symbol isn't the same as a real evil symbol (though a swastika isn't bad if it's pointing the opposite way and you don't mind getting constant dirty looks and having to explain your buddhism/hinduism every day).

Yea, if someone identifies with a fictional racist group so much that they tattoo that group's symbol on their body, I'm not gonna see that as a good thing. Reality informs fiction and vice versa. I would seriously side-eye that guy if I saw him on the street.

So, wait a minute.

I think the Empire is fun. I get a kick out of stormtroopers and Darth Vader, and I always preferred the Imperial spaceships over the Rebel faction (except the Millennium Falcon, I owe Han Solo a Wookie Sex Debt).

Does this mean I'm a fascist?

Do you plan to get their symbol tattooed on you? Mind you, villains are usually my favorite characters in any medium. But I am not going to put their symbol or their motto on my body.

Why is it only bad if it involves a tattoo?

The Empire has tons of things to it that are visually appealing, like stormtroopers and Vader. Those things have come to be symbols of Star Wars as a whole in popular culture. A tattoo of a stormtrooper helmet doesn't really connote the same 'I think those guys had the right idea' vibe that a Deatheater tattoo does because stormtroopers were pretty much red shirts in Star Wars. Deatheaters were either volunteers or hand-selected for their racist ideals and willingness to do terrible things to people outside their group. Stormtrooper tattoo says 'Star Wars fan.' Deatheater tattoo says 'Deatheater fan.' At least when I look at them and obviously the OP feels somewhat similar. If OP's ex had gotten a Deathly Hallows tattoo, or a lightning bolt scar tattoo, I think it might have been different.

IDK. Just the vibe they give off is really different, IMO.

I feel like this perception may change once HP's as old as Star Wars and people just think back on it fondly as opposed to having intense emotional ties to it.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-11 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Just to say, even a Slytherin tattoo would be different IMO.

How about the imperial symbol though? Say you got that.

I think the Empire is a bit of a different thing entirely because we're never really shown any evidence of them doing crazy evil things (in the original trilogy, anyway) other than the wildly impersonal destruction of Alderaan. And they aren't targeting people based on specific racial or theological traits or anything like that, they just want to rule the galaxy.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
Wellll, I don't know. I wouldn't dismiss Alderaan quite so easily - that's kind of the big old evil stamp that follows them through all the movie. They're literal planet killers - they only stopped because they blew up.

As for not targeting people based on specific racial or theological traits, though the films never go into that, I did find it interesting that the Empire is made up of generic human men (are there any women employed on Imperial Star Destroyers? maybe in the kitchens), and the Rebels have lots of alien cultures in the mix.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-11 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm leaning towards agreeing with you on this. Obviously fiction is not reality, but Death Eaters are pretty closely modelled on pretty obvious and nasty RL ideologies.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-11 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Fiction still holds weight in reality, and branding yourself with a fictional symbol that represents genocide based on their equivalent of racism is still pretty fucking awkward.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-11 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Inverted cross.
You compare the inverted cross to a Nazi swastika?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-11 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh wait, is it because you're Christian?
Then let me laugh even louder.

I was referring to the visceral reaction it would create in people who hold certain beliefs. Like a devout Christian seeing an inverted cross (and understanding it from a pop culture POV), or a person who was a survivor of the Holocaust seeing a swastika. That reaction being varying degrees of 'that is definitely NOT cool and that guy is shady.'

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
My dad is a devout Christian and after I told him the inverted cross is more a Christian symbol than "Satanic" one (its name is "Cross of St. Peter" too) he was quite amused.

Yea, it's funny when the actual meaning of things has nothing at all to do with the pop culture meaning haha.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
LMAO, calm down. It's people like you who ruin everything stupidly fun. Unless he's doing something horrible, he's probably one of those idiots who just thinks Deatheaters are cool and nothing more.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
tbh, someone being one of those idiots who think Deatheaters are cool seems like a legit reason to break up with them to me

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
TBQH, you're probably no catch yourself.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
Not saying that I think they are cool but people need to learn to let go of the stupid shit. No relationship is perfect, you will always roll your eyes at someone's likes but as long as its harmless and stupid, so what?

This is relationships have no backbone and why relationships even have a bad rep. You all give up so fast. "NOO, UGLY TATTOO/NOOO YOU THINK SOMETHING IS COOL, THE SAME THING I THINK IS STUPID WE HAVE TO BREAK UP".

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
How do you tattoo an inverted cross onto your body? How can you tell it's inverted at any given time?
