Not at all a bad reason. He tattooed the equivalent of a swastika or an inverted cross on himself.

I see nothing wrong with breaking up with him for that. I mean, yes, it's fiction, but, in my opinion, it still represents hatred of others.

There have got to be better tattoos if you're just trying to express your love for HP. (Unless you really REALLY love that one Harry/Draco fic and also get a "TURN" tattoed above a dark mark, but that is some hardcore fanfic love.)

This is an excellent reason. Though I'd argue that you can do fandom tattoos in a way that isn't tasteless.

There are so many Bioshock Infinite tattoos on the subreddit. Just. Why would you do that. All the triforce tattoos are often tacky but at least you know the games have been around enough to have had a discernible effect on someone's life. What is your excuse, Songbird Tattoo?

I disagree and think the design itself is pretty cool. I'm not a HP fan, so I don't think too much about what it symbolizes.

I can kind of get that, actually. I mean, I can't really think of any positive correlations with the dark mark, unless you just like the characters who have one, but didn't think about the meaning behind it. I mean, it's fictional and he can do what he wants, but idk.

1. It's dark mark not death mark but 2. I super agree with you. If anybody likes Voldemort's philosophy so much they want to permanently add the symbol of it to their body OR if someone is shallow enough to go "Oh that looks cool I guess" and then permanently add it to their body, I really doubt there is a bright future in it for you, honey.

I haven't read Half Blood Prince or anything after it so can someone explain everyone's distaste of the Dark Mark? I thought it was just a mark for the villains of Voldies gang, a gang tattoo pretty much. Why do people keep bringing up racism?

I don't blame you, people getting that tattoo make me uncomfortable. Just because it's fictional doesn't mean its meaning evaporates or that it holds no weight in reality. It still represents the attempted genocide against a group of people, their equivalent of ethnic cleansing.

Few people are going to look at a person with a dark mark and think, "Holy shit. That guy's a racist."

Their first thought will probably be along the lines of "Hey, Harry Potter fan" or "Weirdo" or "That's some cool ink, what is it?"

Am I the only one who noticed it's written "Death Mark" instead of "Dark Mark" in the secret?

Anyway: I can see breaking up with someone over that. It says a lot about his judgement that he wanted that permanently on his body. It's hard to imagine that not looking tacky, the associated -isms from the canon are unpleasant, and having to explain what it is to employers/acquaintances is always going to be awkward.

Uh... well that's your decision, but I seem to have missed the memo everyone else here got about how it's a horrible thing. Or maybe I discarded it because it contained the word "swastika".

I don't think it can be compared to a swastika really. I think the Deathly Hallows symbol is more like the swastika, considering both symbols originally had different meanings but were appropriated by people who did horrible things (Hitler and Grindelwald) and then the symbol's were so intrinsically linked to their causes and actions that people would then react negatively to them, despite their original meanings (like how Krum reacted to seeing Xenophilius wearing the DH symbol). Actually, Gindelwald went down the same year as Hitler so there's even more of a connection on that one.

But the Deathly Hallows symbol got re-appropriated in a way by fans as representative of the HP series because its connection to Grindelwald was only briefly mentioned, but its connection to the "quest" and its use to identify other believes of the Hallows was much more prominent... so now it's sort of used as a way of identifying other HP fans. So I don't really see any awkwardness with that one being used for tattoos.

Now the Dark Mark is more like the KKK symbol in my opinion. The films even designed the Death Eater robes as similar to the KKK robes. The meaning behind the symbol is uniquely associated with the cause of the groups who used them so it's a lot more iffy to me to tattoo a dark mark on yourself permanently. I've seen some nice temporary ones for cosplay, but like... permanently branding yourself with the symbol of oppression and genocide? Yikes. It's like the difference between people who think the villains are interesting, and actually thinking the villains were RIGHT or good.

Ok so, dark mark bad. Got it. But does this apply to other fictional marks? I mean, what does a Deceptacon logo say about me as a person? Or a Horde tattoo? Does the Brotherhood of Mutants have an identifying symbol? Which ones are socially acceptable?
