What I don't get is why anyone would want a fandom-related tattoo in the first place. That shit's permanent, dude. (Unless you shell out thousands of dollars, that is.) You're banking on the fact that you're still going to be so into that fandom that you want it emblazoned on your body for the rest of your life.

Maybe it's just my cranky old age talking but I don't know a single person my age (early 30s) who is still into the same fandoms they were ten or even five years ago, or if they are, it's not to the same degree that they were back then. People's interests change, and fandoms are no exception.

In short, I agree with you, OP, not just because it's a Dark Mark tattoo but because IMO a fandom tattoo in general is a sign of immaturity and a lack of foresight. Liking a fandom is one thing. Liking a fandom so much that you want to permanently etch it into your skin... yeah, I'd be out of there too.

Also in my early 30s, and I love every one of my fandom tattoos I got years ago.

I don't have to be super die hard about all of them any more. The tattoos are reminders of places I've been in my life, physical and emotional. They are that for a lot of people. So, when I look at my fandom tattoos, even though my intense fandom love may have waned, it makes me think of all the good memories I have from not only the fandom, but from my real life during that period of time when I was super into that fandom.

Of course people's interests change, but that doesn't mean we don't like a little reminder. I don't watch Xena that often or read fic, but my chakram tattoo always makes me think of when I worked as a club promoter and stayed up all night dancing, then got back to my place with my best friend just in time to watch Xena on the Oxygen Network at 9am. Or sometimes it reminds me of dressing up as Xena for my sketch comedy troupe, or the first time I bonded with one of my best friends while we were watching one of the funnier episodes.

I think judging people because they have fandom tattoos shows immaturity. You don't have to fully understand someone's motivations to appreciate that they are there.

You know it's fine that you want to keep your body a blank slate that can seamlessly move into each phase of your life unchanged, but why does it have to be a sign of immaturity when other people don't see it that way? I've always liked the idea of having the things I felt strongly about or the images I loved tattooed on me, I would definitely not regret the tattoo I wanted when I was 17 (but didn't have the wherewithal to get) and I'm 27.
Like personally I will never get a fandom tattoo, but I really disagree with your argument that anyone who does so lacks foresight and maturity. They just have different priorities than you.

yeah, but what about when you're 47 or 57 or 67, though? that's what i think they're getting at. a tattoo isn't like a hairstyle or something that you can change when you get tired of it, you really are stuck with it for the rest of your life.

i know a few of my parents' friends who got tattoos (not even fandom tattoos) when they were younger and now that they're in their 40s and 50s and older every single one of them regrets doing it. i really doubt that just happens to be a coincidence.

I hear you! I know people regret tattoos, and obviously people get coverup tattoos all the time. But I also know older people who don't regret their tattoos. It depends on the tattoo?
Like when faced with something specific (say, a Dark Mark, or the ones the 1D kids get) I can say "I don't think you've thought this through". But to say tattoos in general, or even "all fandom tattoos", are mistakes and lacking forethought is making too many generalizations about other peoples choices and lives.
I know this is kind of a pointless argument (obv some speculation and generalizations are necessary) but I just thought I'd clarify my position.
I think there are too many conflicting messages out there about which choices will *ruin your future* and you will *regret them forever* I guess.
(fwiw I am all for calling someone who gets a dark mark tattoo an immature and short sighted individual)

haha i guess i just haven't met any of the ones who don't regret them yet! the funny thing is that the people i've talked to all thought they were going to be the ones who didn't regret it and that their parents and the adults who told them not to do it were just being silly.

i think it's easy to think when you're 23 that having a biker skeleton tattooed on your bicep is going to be an awesome thing to show your grandkids but when you're in your 60s and actually have grandkids and a wife and a white-collar job at a big company then suddenly it's not so cool anymore.

DA

All of the old tattooed people I know like their tattoos and are still happy to show them off. Also, more and more workplaces are becoming tattoo friendly. I work for a corporation and visible tattoos are allowed as long as they're not offensive.

If I were at all inclined to get tattoos, I would go for symbols that I would be able to appreciate long after I stop being actively involed in the fandom.

I would still give some consideration to getting a Griever tattoo (Final Fantasy 8), or an Autobot symbol tattoo, or maybe even a Devil's Trap (SPN), or Fili's personal symbol (The Hobbit).

I don't like Death Eaters because they are, as an organisation, not something that appealed to me. Individual characters interested me, but not the group. I wouldn't get a Dark Mark because of that, and the mark, as shown in the movies, is very tacky and tasteless in purely aesthetic terms.
