I hate it when people say she's unemotional, as if she doesn't have feelings. The entire series is about how strongly she loves her family, her friends, her life, her dignity, and eventually her husband. It's just that she doesn't express those emotions, because she's too busy kicking ass. And also because she was forced to grow up fast because her father died and her mother went insane, so she believed emotions were a weakness. She's never sentimental, and for some reason people don't believe that a female character could be anything less than weepy if her sister was chosen for a fight to the death. She's not perfect--she can be really callous if she doesn't care--but she's not unemotional, and even if she tries to appear that way, she's not cruel.

All of this. There's so much whining about why we can't have more strong female characters who get shit done - and then we get Katniss, and there's all this whining about how she's a huge bitch who doesn't care about people's feelings. Like, what? Are we reading the same book?

And when they're not doing that, they're calling her 'weak' for daring to develop PTSD as the result of what she's been through.

Seriously! This was one of the things I liked about the series! She really did care, but she put that stuff on the backburner to take care of more immediate needs, like saving people and surviving. Plus I thought it made a lot of the scenes feel more urgent to have Katniss processing and reacting, rather than focusing on her feelings.

I agree, and would also add that I'm pretty sure she had PTSD from her father's death, which was only exacerbated as the story went along and which she never received treatment for. In any case, I think she's fairly justified in being angry and closed-off all the time. For one thing, it's very believable, and for another I think it's a sign of her strength of character that she kept herself and her loved ones alive for as long as she did. Even though she came close to giving up several times and often needed help from others just to keep going, she still kept fighting.
