People hate her? I had no idea.

Bright side: the kind of people who take time out of their lives to obsessively hate the lead character of a young adult novel/movie are not the kind of people you need to like you.

what about non-YA tho

what if they obsessively hate someone from an adult novel

I don't get why people get angry at her having 'No emotion'. Hey, some people don't show or feel them. /speaking only from books here.

I hate it when people say she's unemotional, as if she doesn't have feelings. The entire series is about how strongly she loves her family, her friends, her life, her dignity, and eventually her husband. It's just that she doesn't express those emotions, because she's too busy kicking ass. And also because she was forced to grow up fast because her father died and her mother went insane, so she believed emotions were a weakness. She's never sentimental, and for some reason people don't believe that a female character could be anything less than weepy if her sister was chosen for a fight to the death. She's not perfect--she can be really callous if she doesn't care--but she's not unemotional, and even if she tries to appear that way, she's not cruel.

Thumbs up.

All of this. There's so much whining about why we can't have more strong female characters who get shit done - and then we get Katniss, and there's all this whining about how she's a huge bitch who doesn't care about people's feelings. Like, what? Are we reading the same book?

Yeah, it's not fun seeing all the Katniss hate, for sure. And "no emotions" is kind of ridiculous, because the reason she's one of the few people who volunteers (from the districts that don't get training, at least) is because she loves her sister so much. She's rough around the edges, but at the core of her is love for her sister.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-11 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's easier to hate the main protagonist since the reader/viewer tends to see things from their point of view, the good and the bad.

I don't know too much about Katniss since I haven't read the books, but I noticed this when my brother told me he really hated Ted's actions on How I Met Your Mother, and a lot of people told me that Harry was so much easier to hate than Ron or Hermione.

Not always true, but I think it's a pretty common thing.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-11 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked her. If that helps?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Are you referring to Katniss the character or Jennifer the actress?

Either way, I was always under the impression that everyone loved the both of them (Jennifer especially). I for one do. She's blunt and sarcastic and--hopefully--real, and I love that about her.

I don't dislike her because she's not very emotional. I dislike her because she, like most of the cast, is badly written.

Also she's mean to cats.

If my writing ever gets published, I'll get that reaction. I'm told my characters come off as cold and unaffected, and those tend to be the characters I relate to most. Oops.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
People don't need a reason to hate females. And that's fucking pathetic.

If this series had better writing, more people would probably like her or feel more sympathy for her.

I hated her in the book but liked her in the movie

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
It gets better, OP. Honest.

The world has strange expectations for women. There was hate at Buffy over this too. Society has this default idea that female people always have to be performatively caring, and emotive, and open by nature, or else there's something wrong with them.

The complaints about Katniss are nothing more than gender policing. You're okay as you are, and there are plenty of people out in the real world who'll recognize that and respect you for it.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
I see this SO much. I don't so much see 'hate' for her, as I do people saying she's a flat, unconvincing character from a criticism POV. But one of the things I absolutely loved about the novels was that she has all this awful, AWFUL shit happen to her and she actually has a natural emotional reaction. She has a mental breakdown. It happens so often in fiction that people have all this stuff happen that would incapacitate most real life people and they just brush it off like they stubbed a toe. She can be cold and unfeeling sometimes, because she NEEDS to be: she wouldn't survive in this world without it. But her love for her sister is the catalyst for the whole novel.

It is a bit like she can't win. Either she's a bitch for being unfeeling and cold or she's weak for realistically breaking down after being traumatised multiple times. Sigh. I do have problems with stuff in the novel (the stuff about how she doesn't deserve Peeta and he's sooo much better, gag me) but this wasn't one of them.

Well speaking as someone who's aware that her personality puts some people off, the whole idea of aggressively hating someone because of their personality just reminds me of bullies in grade school. So fuck 'em.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
I don't care for Katniss, but I wouldn't say unemotional...She comes across to me as more taciturn.

Even then, what really put me off her was how she reacted to her mother in the first book. : /

I've seen good meta that she's got PTSD from her father's death

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
So you still might be messed up OP.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
Cut the poor girl some slack, it's not like she hasn't gotten a massive case of PTSD.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 11:13 am (UTC)(link)
Aww, if it's what you're getting at OP - As people go I appear pretty emotionless. My face doesn't convey it well and I tend to put emotions on the backburner until I can deal with them later - even if later is a few years or so down the track.

But I do have the emotions, caring and feelings...and I'm sure you do too or you wouldn't be worried

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 11:56 am (UTC)(link)
Am I the only one who is equally moved by both the ship sinking and the romance storyline?

It always seems that everyone only cares about one or the other.
