I was just reading about Marie Antoinette on Wikipedia and I'm reminded of the bit of Roger Ebert's review that was on the page:
"every criticism I have read of this film would alter its fragile magic and reduce its romantic and tragic poignancy to the level of an instructional film. This is Sofia Coppola's third film centering on the loneliness of being female and surrounded by a world that knows how to use you but not how to value and understand you."

and the consensus was that different people from different parts of the world, culture and life experiences prefer and regard female, women, girl and ladies in different manners - and that as long as the context the word is used in, chances are it's not derogatory and it's just a form you're not used to hearing.
