I don't care for Katniss, but I wouldn't say unemotional...She comes across to me as more taciturn.

Even then, what really put me off her was how she reacted to her mother in the first book. : /

Really? Because I thought her relationship with her mother was perfectly understandable. She wasn't hateful or even rude to her mother, just distrustful, which isn't strange given her feelings of abandonment. Plus, growing up in a dystopian world, she probably lacked the knowledge to understand her mother's mental breakdown, which is probably too much to expect of a child even by normal society's standards.
