Showa era? As in the Japanese showa era? I haven't seen that used for non-Japanese fandom stuff, but I know what you meant by it.

Honestly, good luck. This is what held me back from watching DW for a long time before I said fuck it and started from the Eccleston era.

What does showa mean?

It was the name of the era when Hirohito reigned. It ran from 1929 to 1989. We are currently in the Heisei period. (We are currently in Heisei 25.)

The break between Showa and Heisei proved a convenient break point for discussing eras in various Japanese media, as well.

It really is a pretty convenient cut-off point. I mostly talk about JPop, but referring to Showa and Heisei works out pretty well.

JPop fandom! =D I use it pretty frequently, referring to "showa era idol singers" (Matsuda Seiko, Pink Lady, Onyanko Club, Yamaguchi Momoe, etc.) But yeah.

I recognised it mostly because I once read a commentary on Godzilla that classified it by which era it came from.

Then later I found out Showa was Hirohito too.
