Well, good luck to you if you ever attempt it.

I found the one First Doctor Era serial that I watched to be super boring.

Sames. It just killed me with how boring it was.

Are you me? I've passed on a looooot of shows and comic books because I can't stand the idea of starting anywhere but the beginning. :(

Showa era? As in the Japanese showa era? I haven't seen that used for non-Japanese fandom stuff, but I know what you meant by it.

Honestly, good luck. This is what held me back from watching DW for a long time before I said fuck it and started from the Eccleston era.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-11 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
What does showa mean?

I am so glad I'm not the only one who understood that reference.

I don't know why, but your using of the Showa era kinda lifted my spirits today, and I'm not even Japanese.

I'm like this usually, but the fact that some of the serials no longer exist anywhere anymore, and that thus watching the whole thing in order is completely impossible now, allowed me to give myself permission not to. I do still want to watch some of the classic series, but I don't feel the need to watch everything, or necessarily in the right order.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-11 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm the same with most things. I've tried explaining this to fans, but they just tell me that I don't have to do that and suggest I start with this or that Doctor.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-11 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Showa era? Is this supposed to be another "I think Destiel is boring and I don't know why people like him" secret?

The phrase is being used oddly, but correctly - it's usually not used for non-Japanese media, but, since Showa Era refers to a time period (1929-1989, when Hirohito was on the throne), it's perfectly accurate, if not a bit quirky, to refer to things happening outside of Japan using the term.

Heh, I actually did that for awhile before I figured out that I could make it through the episodes that bored me a lot easier if I skipped around and watched ones I liked better in between. This also meant that I could save serials from my favorite Doctors for the end (I kind of can't bear to actually finish, though, so I've had about five serials just waiting to be watched for the past few years).

Maybe you can do it in incomplete chronological order? Instead of watching every single episode in order, watch just two or three serials from each season, starting with the first season. Then fill in the gaps later.

OTOH, working through the entire show in order actually sounds like a really, really interesting experience! I don't think very many people do it, so it would be pretty unique if you decide to do it. Like maybe, you could decide to watch at least one serial per week, perhaps more if you feel the inclination, and slowly work through it that way. And maybe keep an episode reflection journal while you do it, to make it more interesting or something.

You know, Rider and Who are not as dissimilar as you might think, OP.

(Unless that was your point?)

Regardless: A+ swerve, would lol again.

Sadly, this is impossible, since not all of the older serials are still in existence.

Its also probably impossible because no-one can physically sit through some of the original serials without falling asleep. I have tried the Web Planet challenge at least three times, but it can't be done. Your body shuts down in self-protection.

This made me laugh harder than it should have, but I have to side with you in this, even as both an 'old Who' as well as a 'new Who' fan.

There are just some old Who episodes/serials that my eyes start to glaze over and I swear I start drooling a little.

Four/Romana II forever though!

I don't know, I got through the Web Planet, though there's quite a few far better serials.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I'm like this, I also feel like I should listen the audio versions of the scripts from the missing episodes since I can't miss anything.
I do have a soft spot for older science fiction so I doubt that I'll find them boring but the sheer amount of episodes really puts me off.

I think I'd really enjoy the show if I watched it though.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
For the missing episodes, I'd recommend reading the Target novelizations of the serials instead. Personally, I found it easier to read them than to sit through the audio only bits. (But some of the reconstructions are alright too.)

[personal profile] riddian 2013-06-12 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Well, here is a link if you want to start. A lot of the early stuff is spotty or missing though, so you won't be able to watch everything. Hopefully that doesn't ruin it for you...

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
It really isn't necessary to start at the very beginning with Doctor Who. New Who definitely doesn't require knowledge of Classic Who to watch and there are some good places to start watching Classic Who from that aren't the very beginning.
But if you really want to watch it all from the beginning, good luck!

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
I admit I've been doing this and finding it rather enjoyable.

I like watching the show evolve and the way the different Doctors interact with all their companions, even if some of the serials are tough to watch sometimes.

I'm on the Fourth doctor now and I'm quite enjoying his era.

I've been doing this, kind of. I did watch all of Nu!Who before going back and watching the old series from the beginning, though.

If you do try it, all I can say is good luck. I've been slowly chipping away at it for over a year I think I've only made it a little over half-way through Two's run so far. I think it'll be easier once I make it past all the missing episodes/reconstructions, but it's definitely burned me out. And even ignoring the reconstructions, some episodes are just so dull.

But doing that jumping around thing a lot of people recommend would just drive me crazy, so...

Tricky to do but even with all the missing eps early on, it can be done. I know because I'm working on it right now. It's taken a year or so but I'm onto the Second Doctor. You can find alot of them on Youtube and Dailymotion, even the missing ones because some clever cookies have reconstructed them with the audio & production stills.
