I think it depends on the pill and the way it reacts to your body. If you're having breakthrough bleeding after only six weeks, it's probably not strong enough for it to work - it can vary wildly between pills.

I was on one pill that I could take indefinitely and would never bleed through. The longest I went was about six months, but honestly I think I would have been able to go forever. Then I went on another pill, and my period never stopped.

I wouldn't start experimenting with different pills if this one otherwise is working well for you, but if you're having other problems as well you could see if your GP could prescribe you a different one.
