Minor vent -- TMI alert

(Anonymous) 2013-06-11 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been trying to stack this summer, because my room is farther from the bathroom than I'd like, and face it -- it's hot out, and the sweat just makes it feel so much grosser. I was successful for about six and a half weeks, after which point my body decided to somehow completely ignore the "fact" that it was "pregnant" and start bleeding anyway.

I'm not happy. :( Especially because it didn't start at the right time of week, so now I'm going to have to deal with it during class tomorrow and through two appointments the next day (which also involves a couple of walks through the heat to get there; at this point I might just cancel them). I was really hoping to get at least eight weeks...

Sorry but what exactly does stack mean? I'm not quite sure what you're talking about.

Stacking Birth Control pills I assume

At first, I thought it was some kind of exercise routine, but couldn't figure out what that had to do with the weather or the distance to the bathroom. Then I was worried about the OP doing exercises that were making her bleed while pregnant. Then I noticed the quote marks around "pregnant" and I figured it out.

I was just as confused as you, Anon.

I've never tried to do this, but I've had "breakthrough bleeding" on the pill while using it normally. Whether this happened seemed to depend on the particular version of the pill, because I didn't have the same problem with all of the ones I tried.

Maybe you need to try another brand/type? Did your doctor say the one you're on would work for this?

I think it depends on the pill and the way it reacts to your body. If you're having breakthrough bleeding after only six weeks, it's probably not strong enough for it to work - it can vary wildly between pills.

I was on one pill that I could take indefinitely and would never bleed through. The longest I went was about six months, but honestly I think I would have been able to go forever. Then I went on another pill, and my period never stopped.

I wouldn't start experimenting with different pills if this one otherwise is working well for you, but if you're having other problems as well you could see if your GP could prescribe you a different one.

Just a small correction. Birth control pills don't actually work by making the body think it's pregnant; that's a common misconception. They cease ovulation, and in some cases increase cervical mucous as well.

I sympathize with you; the only form of hbc I have been able to stack on has been the nuvaring. Everything else, NEWP. Breakthrough bleeding, hahaha, fuck you, my body says. This especially sucked when I was on a particular couple of brands that gave me intense cramping (and having never experienced anything but mild cramps before, OOF. I suddenly had a LOT more sympathy/empathy for the friends who had gone through it always. Not that I didn't care before but it's different once you've experienced it yourself, seriously).

Um, how long have you been on the pill, too? Because generally, if you're trying to stack in the first 3mo you're on a new pill, that doesn't work so well... body hasn't had time to adjust yet.

I started using Seasonale (one of the ones that's meant to only have a bleed every three months and minus a little spotting it seems to be working-- I don't know if the fact that it's a different brand name is jut a pharmaceutical gimmick or if it's actually composed differently to work better period-free, but if no bleeding is what you're aiming for, maybe it would be worth it to talk to your doctor about getting on a type that's meant to go longer with no bleeding?
