Re: Living with parents

[personal profile] deadtree 2013-06-12 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I get a lot of crap about living with my parents at my age, too (I'm 28)... I'm what is called a "boomerang kid", in that I moved away for college and then moved to Japan for several years, but when I came back I couldn't get a job that paid well enough to live on my own. Now I DO have a job that would pay for me to live on my own (though not in a nice place or anything), but my parents wouldn't be able to support themselves without my income. It's kind of a weird situation.

In the US we have a tendency to think that once a kid turns 18 they should be booted out, or at the latest 21/22, but I think the reality is very different. The way the job market is right now it's unrealistic to think that an 18-year-old would ever be able to live on their own, or even be able to afford to be a roommate with someone.
