Whether you want to call something "fanfiction" or not is largely a matter of semantics. Everything—everything—is derivative. Everything is a remix.

There really isn't a truly "original" story left to be written. The plots and the tropes have all been set. You've just got to present them in an entertaining way, and you're good to go.
