Looks like you're gonna be disappointed, Drama Snacker. My condolences. :(

1. Unless you're writing this secret while drunk, I think you need a bit more practice before you get anything shareable, so write whatever you want and don't share it.
2. That's not a copyright violation, that's a trope.

tough cookies, that's what you basically did, you just haven't put it on paper.

Just write it as fiction and acknowledge the inspiration. Sounds like it's different enough from the source.

...but that's a fairly common thing for even published authors to do? (Seriously, read something about "filing off the serial numbers" sometime.) I mean. People get inspiration everywhere.

You can't copyright an idea. Brian Lee O'Malley does not own the idea of a character fighting another character's exes.

If you write a story with different characters and a similar but different plot, you are not violating copyright.

Whether you want to call something "fanfiction" or not is largely a matter of semantics. Everything—everything—is derivative. Everything is a remix.

Yes! Yes.

There really isn't a truly "original" story left to be written. The plots and the tropes have all been set. You've just got to present them in an entertaining way, and you're good to go.

There's a quote my teacher told us in our creative writing workshop, it goes something like: "Bad writers borrow, good writers steal". The mentality is that when you "borrow" you generally want to keep what you borrow in tact so you are basically plagiarizing. When you "steal" you take it as your own and are free to do whatever the hell you want with it. The more you beat the crap out of it, the better.

Everything is inspired by something else. The first draft of Star Wars was a complete ripoff of The Hidden Fortress. Take the idea and make it your own, giving credit where credit is due. When you're done, it should be pretty original because it was written by you.

Yes to all replies above. Go for it, OP! I'd read that story.
