There's a quote my teacher told us in our creative writing workshop, it goes something like: "Bad writers borrow, good writers steal". The mentality is that when you "borrow" you generally want to keep what you borrow in tact so you are basically plagiarizing. When you "steal" you take it as your own and are free to do whatever the hell you want with it. The more you beat the crap out of it, the better.

Everything is inspired by something else. The first draft of Star Wars was a complete ripoff of The Hidden Fortress. Take the idea and make it your own, giving credit where credit is due. When you're done, it should be pretty original because it was written by you.
