Those people are misrepresenting Supernatural. It's true that it's really sad and dark at times, but it's also hilarious and awesomely cracky. Some people just fixate on the emotionally brutal stuff and forget that there's an actual scene of a unicorn shooting a rainbow out its ass, for instance. It's not like it's grimdark or something.

All of this. I find SPN to be tonally inconsistent a lot of the time (among its other problems), but I still prefer that to what would happen if they made the show consistently as dark and sad as it *can* be.

I like the whiplash, though, lol. You can be laughing one minute and crying the next. My Bloody Valentine is the best episode for that, good lord. And then, if you get a string of really cracky episodes, like the leadup to Abandon All Hope, you know something horrible is going to happen.
