liking non-tragic things doesn't make you stupid. sad=/=deep, as many discover after high school.

I think works that manipulate their audiences to feel sad are pretty shallow.

Probably a dumb question, but what's that one in the upper right? It looks pretty.

Attack on Titan. Which I completely recommend!

Black comedies are a good example on how tragedy can at times be fun. Supernatural and Shingeki no Kyojin for example, do have notable moments of humor.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Having moments of humor as well as tragedy is not black comedy. Most stories have both.

Emotional fatigue is a perfectly good reason not to watch a show. You know your own tolerances better than anyone else, so you get to judge what you want to watch in your spare time.

exhausting is the perfect word to describe this type of story, and I totally agree. All sadness all the time is not something I'm interested in. Which is why I quit GoT

No shame in this! While I like some tragic things (oh god putting Madoka in your secret, I cried so hard over it), I generally like positive/happy things that bring up my mood. There are plenty of things that are REALLY excellent and happen to be uplifting, happy and generally nice.

(I recommend Pushing Daisies if you haven't seen it; a lot of it's about death, but it's just so bright and happy)

I personally love dark and tragic stories but even I don't want to be constantly watching or reading them all the time, I want people to be happy sometimes dammit.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-11 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Attack on Titan isn't really dark or tragic, apart from occasional moments.

Life's harsh enough as it is, OP. If you want to laugh instead of cry on your time off, go right ahead.

Madoka is really short so you might wanna give it a shot anyways.

Nothing wrong wit not liking tragedies. I'm more ashamed about watching some things because people say they're tragic.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Madoka, you might want to give it a shot. It's a very good tragedy and honestly,I found the ending very uplifting. Sad for sure, but it was so uplifting.

Normally I agree, but I found Madoka heartwarming at the end at least. Not everyone does though, so I can't blame you. I'm not huge on sad stuff either.

On Madoka Magica and angst

I think this sums up the problem with how Madoka fans try (and fail) to convince other people to watch the show:

I initially had EXACTLY the reaction you did, but that review convinced me to give it a watch. I'd say it's pretty good overall (though I still prefer the lighter stuff.)

I'm wary of EVA for the same reason. *hug*

I got into Madoka because I heard about the Nightmare Fuel aspect of it first. Magical Girls + scary creepy shit? SIGN ME UP. The sadness hit me as soon as I started watching it, but I was so invested in the plot and what would happen next that I wanted to stick around to see if there was any chance for a hopeful ending. Which thankfully, paid off. :D

It's only twelve episodes too, so you won't be wasting a whole lot of time if the show isn't to your taste. :)

Those people are misrepresenting Supernatural. It's true that it's really sad and dark at times, but it's also hilarious and awesomely cracky. Some people just fixate on the emotionally brutal stuff and forget that there's an actual scene of a unicorn shooting a rainbow out its ass, for instance. It's not like it's grimdark or something.

i think i'm the only person who didn't find madoka that sad and the more people force it on others to like, the more annoyed i get. accept that some people don't like a popular thing already!

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
And all the people ignoring the fact the OP said they didn't want to watch a show to say 'You should give it a shot!'

That kind of thing is why I tend run from things [...well that, and tragic stories really *are* completely draining.]

I sort of hate when people do this too, for a slightly different reason. I like sad and tragic storylines as much as the next guy- but you know what ruins them? Having someone (literally, or just a voice in the back of your head) going "Okay, the really sad part is coming up. Are you ready for the sadness? Because seriously, grab some tissues!!!" the whole time. It's sort of the same as watching a series that was overhyped. It's fine, but you're already expecting it to be awesome so it falls flat. With Madoka especially, I'm so glad that even though I went into that show months after all my friends, I didn't know to expect TRAGEDYYYYY- so it really packed a punch. It wouldn't have been the same, and I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much if I knew "something was up", especially since the show doesn't start out that way at all.
