Fancy but easy-to-eat food?

[personal profile] fenm 2013-06-12 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
I'm writing a story where one character sprains his arm, and his SO takes care of him, including making him a nice dinner. It occurs to me that the SO would make him something easy to eat (though he might offer to feed him), but I want it to be something special. I'm not much of a chef, so nothing comes to mind... Any ideas?

A soup maybe?

Soup! Wow, I can't believe I didn't think of that...

I've found a few good recipes on the Web. Thanks!

I recently sprained my shoulder, and I feel his pain.

GOOD:
- any kind of noodles that can be rolled up on a fork
- likewise, smaller pastas that are easily stabbed (raviolis, macaroni)
- soups and broths
- salads (tossed, macaroni, chicken, potato, whatever)
- mashed potatoes, pudding, ice cream, etc

Pretty much anything that can be picked up, spooned, or forked with one hand.

BAD:
- sandwiches, hamburgers, wraps, tacos, whatever requires two hands
- tough meats (steak, pork chops) ...unless you want the SO to cut up his food for him
- shellfish

That said, IME, you can use your arm if absolutely necessary, it just hurts and will prolong healing time.

tough meats

Yeah, I was going to have them have fish, then I realized cutting it might be difficult. Granted, most fish cut easy, but still...

Tortellini! I love tortellini... and with a really good sauce, some parmesean cheese, and maybe some garlic toast, it could be pretty damn fancy/romantic~. ♥

One direction he might take it is to take meal-foods and miniaturize them into hors d'oeurves, and just make enough to constitute a full meal. That way they can be eaten one-handed and without much mess, but still contain the entire fancy meal. I remember one time for a party, I made shepherd's pie tarts. Mini-muffin tin and pie dough (though you could also do it with those phyllo cups they sell frozen now), a bit of ground meat, gravy, and veggies, topped off with a dollop of mashed potatoes and a sprinkle of paprika. There are plenty of fancy and sophisticated ways to hors-d'oeurve-ize an entree. And obviously, doing it to a dessert is easy.

Well, where are they feeding him? In bed? (This kind of matters because, you know, crumbs.) Maybe, though, comsomme (if you want fancy) in a mug. If not, then maybe finger foods - easy to eat one-handed and can be really fancy - mini quiches, spring rolls, savory tarts or tartlettes, stuffed mushrooms or peppers, dumplings, puffs, etc.

They're eating at a table, for dinner.

Those are some good idea. Tarts! Yummy!
