given that they willingly partake in a series with lots of rape, discussion of rape, implications of rape and threats of rape, on top of the incest and everything else (and let's not forget the underagesex involving a 13 year old that was turned into a rape scene for the show despite said 13 year old being aged up so they could show her tits) -- is it really any surprise? anyone who claims to be a SJW or a feminist or whatever but likes GoT i side-eye the hell out of

I didn't know that showing the ugliness of the world was anti-feminism.

DA

There's a salaciousness to it that takes it beyond "bad things happen in real life", though.

I disagree. Can you give me an example?

Dany's rape/molestation scenes were both eroticized in filming. There was no reason to show her tits either when her brother was groping her or when Drogo was raping her.

Then there was Theon's torture this season, which was also framed as porn rather than rape.

NAYRT

Dany's scenes with Drogo were all written, in unnecessary detail, to titillate, even though she was a thirteen year old girl sold into marriage-slavery to a thirty-year-old stranger. That Dany herself acknowledges later on that what was done to her against her will was horrible does not change the explicit framing of the relationship as it happened as an erotic romance instead of Stockholm Syndrome in progress.

That's the issue with the series as I've experienced it, what the text claims are ugly and unpalatable things conflicts with how intently and even passionately those things are described. And I don't have a problem with people for liking that, or liking the series despite that, I have a problem with them pretending it doesn't happen at all, which people seem to do every single time ASOIAF is brought up.

Sssh. You don't need to respect the opinion of a person who uses the term "side-eye."

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
You really need to take that saying "You can like something while still acknowledging it's problematic issues" to heart.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Me too! How much I agree with this statement I can't even put into this reply.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
...I wasn't aware anyone ever claimed to be a SJW. Mostly when I see the term pop up it's being used to insult or dismiss the person being labeled as one.

I guess I will tell my gender studies rockin', LGBT-lovin' professor she's got to account for her taste in television, then.

Orrrrrr you could read some of the gajillion writings on GoT/ASoIaF that argue either for a sophisticated feminist reading of the text or the "I know it has issues, but I like these other things about it!"

Aren't we past auditing people's entertainment choices based on their labels at this point?

Yeah, being a feminist means you are never allowed to like anything that has good and bad aspects to it. You're right, A+.
