You are looking in the wrong fandoms!

And isn't bi-Dany pretty much canon?

I thought there was an unspoken law of fandom that there shall always be alternative sexuality interpretations in fanworks. Now you're telling me there is a fandom that does not follow this law and does not approve of interpreting characters as LGBT.

My world order is out of whack.

sounds more like that fandom's order is out of whack tbh. They're the ones doing it wrong.

given that they willingly partake in a series with lots of rape, discussion of rape, implications of rape and threats of rape, on top of the incest and everything else (and let's not forget the underagesex involving a 13 year old that was turned into a rape scene for the show despite said 13 year old being aged up so they could show her tits) -- is it really any surprise? anyone who claims to be a SJW or a feminist or whatever but likes GoT i side-eye the hell out of

I feel your frustration, bb.

I think what makes it extra hard sometimes is that it's a place where the rough and tumble of fandom in general hits a sore spot?

Like, I will argue into the night with anyone who cares to about my fandom's politics, or character motivations, or who is or isn't The Absolute Worst. Standard fandom feuds - I'm right there. But an ask or a review going 'fuck you not every strong female character has to be a lesbian' is different. It kicks you right in the metaphoricals.

I've heard that line quite a lot across different fandoms and I hate it.

Dude, stay away from westeros.org and come hang out on the ontd/tumblr side of the fandom

I have literally N E V E R seen any of those interpretations get shot down in the GoT fandom circles I frequent (I have also seen Margie as a clever little lesbian for I think around 10 years, so high five)

for real though. W.org is a goddamn shithole, towerofthehand is about as bad. I am generally suspicious of reddit but the asoiaf stuff there is exponentially better than most

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoa, people DON'T see that? Have they... have they not read the books? At all? I mean, Margery as a lesbian I really only see in the show, since she has more screentime, but I totally see Dany as bi. There was an entire scene of the book with her handmaid eating her out! And she called her handmaid "sweetling" before this even happened WHILE SLEEPING NAKED TOGETHER.

Personal head canon:

All the Baratheon brothers are gay. Renly openly so, Stannis knows it in his heart but hates himself for it, and Robert bedded woman after woman and developed an unhealthy fixation on Lyanna to convince himself that Ned wasn't the love of his life.

Amen, OP.
I'm only a casual fan, but Dany is bi to me and nobody can tell me otherwise.

When I brought it up in my circle of fandom friends they pretty much told me to get out. But I'm sure this has to do with the fact that they're all straight women, I'm the only bi one, and they want Dany to be "part of their team".

Is there any regard in which this fandom is NOT horrible? Also it's just about THE most het-centric fandom I've ever been in. Unless you ship Robb/Jon/Theon in any combination, you'd better ship het or nobody will give a damn about your ship.

I think there are legitimate reasons to dislike genderqueer!Arya (because a lot of people hate the implication that just because she's not a 'typical' girl she must HATE being a girl and secretly want to be a boy or something, when Arya in the books constantly corrects people who call her a boy with "I'm a girl!" and seems to have no issue whatsoever with being a girl, she just wishes she was better at being all the things that Westerosi society expects girls to be). But Dany is canonically bi and Margaery being lesbian is actually a really popular fan theory?

Because this show (and book) were, at the core, written for teen males and young males who fantasize about rape and boobs and sex with women. It touches a chord in others who have internalized a culture where homosexuality is a shameful thing and male mastery and dominance is the ultimate goal. Women who say they like these probably don't know it but they have a lot of self-hatred. Call me a troll, because you know you will, but I stand by my opinion.

Wh--isn't that shit practically all canon?? I mean, Dany hooks up with her handmaidens, and Margaery totally hits on Sansa...GRRM wrote the episode "The Bear and the Maiden Fair" and that had her straight-up flirting with her; I kinda assumed that was his way of saying "yeah, this is canon, btw." Oh, this fandom's annoying in many ways.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
dany's probably bi but that whole thing with her handmaiden was iffy because just before she was thinking about drogo and how lonely she was, but idk i think there's enough basis that you could say she's bi.

marg in the show is def a swinger lol who the fuck would even deny this. i'd love to say the same for book!marg, but those chapters are all from cersei's pov and i wouldn't call her a reliable narrator when she hates marg :/ but yeah whatever op fuck the haters.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Chiming in with the chorus of people wondering how it's possible *not* to see all kinds of sexualities in ASoIaF.

Cersei and Dany both have canonical sex with women. Where this puts them on the spectrum may be up for debate (and I can see the point about these potentially being more fanservicey than about Dany or Cersei's orientations, but either way, they consented to sexytimes with other women), but we can't pretend it didn't happen. There's evidence for Margaery as lesbian/bi, as well as evidence for her family finding it a non-issue as long as she still does her marriage duties.

There are also plenty of mentions scattered throughout the books of different characters' sexual habits. I believe there's a throwaway line about Roose Bolton swinging both ways, the Blackfish has powerful hints (though nothing confirmed), and the Red Viper is canonically stated to be bisexual, each mentioned with varying degrees of acceptance or disdain. And those are just off the top of my head; I feel like there are actually a lot more hints and brief mentions for a lot of different characters, both big characters and minor. While the representation could be more explicit and better done (imo), and there is little-to-no examination of (again imo) actual gender queering (most characters seem to accept their binary gender assignments, they just chafe at the constraints), there is plenty of canon evidence to support that sexual orientations are as diverse as in the real world.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
on the whole i've found the fandom alright for this, just a couple of people who are the outliers.

That's kind of dumb, especially with non-POV character since there's no way to know... but I've met people who actually think the show "added" Loras and Renly so who the hell knows.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
If a gay guy has sex with a woman, does he stop being gay?
