I thought there was an unspoken law of fandom that there shall always be alternative sexuality interpretations in fanworks. Now you're telling me there is a fandom that does not follow this law and does not approve of interpreting characters as LGBT.

My world order is out of whack.

This. It's how it works in every fandom I've seen.

sounds more like that fandom's order is out of whack tbh. They're the ones doing it wrong.

Idk with GoT cause I'm not in the fandom. But back in my Harry Potter and Star Trek days, I'd say there was a difference between how people reacted to fanworks vs how they reacted to meta?

I femslashed and genderqueered to hell and back in both fandoms with little hassle (barring one ruckus). But as soon as you started throwing around meta to support a potential queer reading of canon, people's hackles went up. *Shrug*

Yes, this.

It also really depends on where you're at, too. If you're in a place that's used to shipping, fic, and art most people tend to live and let live, apart from the occasional drama brigades.

Places that aren't into that sort of thing tend not to be a lot less kind.

Tumblr tends to be where worlds collide, and my god there's a lot of sexuality wank in my other fandoms, so I can only imagine what might happen with ASOIAF, especially with longtime book fans.

I wonder if there's a direct connection between the author shutting down fanworks and this?

I bet you anything there is. Most fandoms have these sorts of fans, ones who see any interpretation that isn't the most "obvious" as wrong. But in GoT fandom, these idiots have the back up of saying "Yes, well GRRM doesn't like people using his works the wrong way! He doesn't approve of your stupid headcanons!" and then they get a bunch of agreement from their fellow idiots.

I think they are selling themselves short if they don't even think Dany has some bi tendencies. I'd say after Drogo, she is even Pansexual and Polyamarous. And I'd say this is pretty hard to refute when you actually look at the canon for her. People are just idiots.

Maybe, but Renly/Loras *comes from* GRRM, and I've still seen people who deny it.

I'd be surprised. In Anne Rice fandom, her shutting down fanworks had the opposite effect, in that people went, "So, you're being so Word Of God that you don't even want us to play with your characters? Well, fuck that, these are our headcanons."

I've especially noticed it in recent years, where she'd respond to fan questions about secondary characters by downplaying the characters' importance and generally writing them off - fans get VERY proprietorial...

Granted, this also happened in a situation where the canon gradually got worse and worse in quality. If, as I understand it (staying off fansites until I finish the series), ASOIAF fans are still happy with the quality of the most recent books, then it may not be an identical situation.

Well, GoT has a good chunk of Canon gays and bis so I suppose people are less interested in making up fanon ones.
