I think there are two problems with Joss Whedon. (and i'm a Joss Whedon fan, and have seen all his stuff)

- He's not the god that people made him out to be (he IS a feminist and a nerd, but he's not perfect so every thing he does that isn't perfect is just fodder for anyone to go LOOK HERE SEE HE'S NOT A FEMINIST OR A GOD OR ANYTHING, he's shit)

- Buffy was pretty revolutionary, but it was over 15 years ago now...Its kinda old. Its hard to look back and say oh your show with tons of female characters isn't all that when actually it was, back then, and set the trend for a lot of other shows. (Buffy & X-files alike are both pretty revolutionary for that time, probably stargate too?)

I get pretty annoyed at both Joss Whedon haters and OMGJOSSISGOD people alike, even though i'm a fan because even though he's not perfect he is better than many and that sort of behavior should be encouraged rather than bought down.

This. And even now there's a lot of shows and movies that still have pretty weak female characters when you look at Buffy. But people expect more from heroines and female leads.

Yeah, Buffy is a good role model for girls. She was always looking for a boyfriend to make her happy while she got all hot and sweaty in tight clothing.

If that's what you're going to reduce Buffy as a character down to, then that's a nice opinion you've got there that's wrong.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
So Buffy's need for a man and her bf troubles were not a staple of six out of seven seasons, and there wasn't a close up of her tits or ass in virtually every episode?

[personal profile] timetobegin 2013-06-13 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah no.

Regardless of whether she was interested in having a boyfriend, wanting to have a boyfriend isn't inherently bad and is not the entirety of her personality. Buffy wanted to have a normal life - boys, school, friends. Having a boyfriend was only part of that.

I can think of a number of episodes where she wore jackets and other quite "modest" clothing, and if there were a close up of her assets, its probably in a fighting capacity. I'm actually too lazy to go and back this up with screencaps, but i'm going to go out on a limb and say that its still not the main point of her personality.

Buffy didn't have a personality. Her dialogue for each episode was whine about boyfriend, then have a fight where something would get torn in an interesting place, then more whining about how she didn't have a boyfriend or that her boyfriend had turned evil, before being comforted by Daddy!Giles.

wait are you the "hulk's violence/male violence is symbolic of rape" anon from the other day??

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
10 bucks says yes

Can I get a link to this?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, exactly. 1) He's human. Everything to come out of his mouth will not please everyone.

2) Revolutionary and 15 years ago -- and not just for all the female characters. As one of the flagship shows on the WB, it was huge in the same way 21 Jump Street and 90120 were for FOX when it first showed up. Watch 21JS now and it sounds ridiculous ... but both networks, when they premiered, were showing teenagers for the first time AS TEENS, not After School Specials. But Buffy and Dawson and Felicity all paved the way for the shows now that treat teenagers as people who are capable of real thought, real conversation, real emotion. Teens became more than football/basketball stars or cheerleaders. Stupid mistakes had consequences for more than a single Very Special Episode. For the ramifications (good and bad) of Buffy having teen sex to extend for the back half of a season was huge. For her to run away and there be consequences, for Willow and Cordelia to go through their very long transformations/arcs to become strong, brave adults. Those things mattered. Was it perfect? Hell no. But for those of us who really had no teens on tv to relate to unless they were family sitcom fodder or After School Specials, it was a revolution. Until Buffy, until Joss -- who, yes, was really at the right place at the right time, which is part of where it all comes from -- all we had was Judy Blume and Sweet Valley High and the like.

So. Yeah. Maybe Joss isn't perfect. Maybe it was right place right time. But he at least gave us an hour a week that meant we weren't stuck with yet another Pleasantville daughter.

Yeah, pretty much this. I mean, I'm rewatching Buffy now and loving it all over again. And it's easy to forget exactly how revolutionary things like Buffy (and X-files and Xena) were way back when.

I think it's the haters more than the fans who see this banner of "JOSS WHEDON: MALE FEMINIST SAVIOR OF ALL MEDIA!!!" being raised, because every time he messes up anything, they're all screaming, "LOOK AT YOUR GOD NOW!!!" And I think most (not all, not the crazies, but most) Whedon fans are like, "Yeeeah? Okay? He's a person, they mess up sometimes."
