I'm just happy to know there's someone else who doesn't watch his shows. It isn't like I haven't tried, they just don't do anything for me.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
He is so overrated. Ever since Firefuck became the poster child for lost masterpiece he has been raved about. The only reason it is thought of as being so brilliant is because it wasn't on long enough for the concept of space western only with the good guys being the confederates after losing gettysburg to get stale. Which would have been only another few episodes. That and it was the show that was on when geeks noticed the trend with FOX early cancellations. If it had come back like Family Guy had, we'd all be calling it shit and making fun of the cast for trying to conceal the inherent racism in trying to make the former slave owners the symbols of freedom.

His face just looks really weird. The red beard and the baldness makes the lower half of his face look much wider than the upper half, like his head is some kind of deformed peanut. And he's obviously trying to minimize the effect of the baldness by cutting his hair short, which doesn't really help with his peanut head.

And it's pretty obvious that he's not a feminist because he has a beard.

Every discussion about him causes great wank so I always look at them but his shows I can't really watch. I'm not sure why all the things I like are there but I just never care about the characters.

Ahh, Joss Whedon. Everyone's favourite hack.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
He's done some good stuff but he is certainly not the Jesus of feminist geekdom. It's hard for me to shake the vibe I get from some of his stuff that it's more about making the women badass because badass women are hot rather than because badass women are badass.

I think there are two problems with Joss Whedon. (and i'm a Joss Whedon fan, and have seen all his stuff)

- He's not the god that people made him out to be (he IS a feminist and a nerd, but he's not perfect so every thing he does that isn't perfect is just fodder for anyone to go LOOK HERE SEE HE'S NOT A FEMINIST OR A GOD OR ANYTHING, he's shit)

- Buffy was pretty revolutionary, but it was over 15 years ago now...Its kinda old. Its hard to look back and say oh your show with tons of female characters isn't all that when actually it was, back then, and set the trend for a lot of other shows. (Buffy & X-files alike are both pretty revolutionary for that time, probably stargate too?)

I get pretty annoyed at both Joss Whedon haters and OMGJOSSISGOD people alike, even though i'm a fan because even though he's not perfect he is better than many and that sort of behavior should be encouraged rather than bought down.

Honestly, I think he's very imaginative and creative, so I generally enjoy his work and will check something out if I see it's got his name on it. But as for the man himself? I have no idea. I pay very little attention to movie people IRL.

How I'm reading this:

"I only get second-hand information about the things that he screws up when other people are mad about it. Because I never watch his shows, I have no idea about the quality of what he gets right or the emotion behind it, only the cold facts, but everyone knows that if you ever make mistakes handling female characters that you are a bad feminist, and that what goes wrong will always outweigh what goes right, especially if I never bother to watch what went right because I don't want to be proven wrong."

I love Joss Whedon's shows/movies. I don't think he's a feminist as much as he wants to be. On one hand, Buffy (note that that's one of his shows) did deconstruct the dumb female who gets eaten - the opening scene of the first episode is <i.gold if you consider how many monster flicks involve a naive girl getting eaten by the monster. But... having a so-called "strong female character" who kicks ass doesn't necessarily a feminist make. I've seen shows that don't try to be feminist that are more feminist.

Plus, I've seen interviews with Joss Whedon and he actually seems a bit full of himself. He thinks he's Dr. Horrible, but he's actually Captain Hammer.

so what you're saying is, you WANNA troll, but you don't quite know why and you don't wanna put in the effort?

(Obligatory personal opinion: he's not perfect, but it's more clearly important to him to write his female characters as complex and real and both flawed AND strong human beings than almost any other writer working today. If that's not feminism to you then I guess we'll have to agree to disagree)

All the political aspects aside

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I just don't like his dialogue. It's too full of quips, and it gives all conversations and characters a very similar feel, I think. Neat that he actually can write good dialogue, but seriously, not everyone has a sheet of come back lines just on the ready.

He's not the greatest feminist ever or anything, but he is a good feminist because he actually really tries. We all make mistakes. At some point in my life I held beliefs that make me now cringe as a feminist. I wouldn't want to be seen forever as that person. Joss Whedon seems entirely willing to learn and adapt and make his writing of female characters better. So I do respect him a lot in that.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
