I just don't like his dialogue. It's too full of quips, and it gives all conversations and characters a very similar feel, I think. Neat that he actually can write good dialogue, but seriously, not everyone has a sheet of come back lines just on the ready.

All of Joss Whedon's characters sound like Joss Whedon. It can be pretty amusing, but it irks me too.

He is too busy showing he can be self referential to write dialogue. I swear he must have graduated from the same film school that Seth MacFarlane did. They both have the same crap handle on dialogue and try to hard to be cool.

Hahaha, yes, this! I appreciate that he makes a lot of female characters. His feminism or lack thereof means less to me than that he's making plenty of female characters that people can identify with as heroes and fuckups and a lot of times heroes-who-are-also-fuckups. That's neat! Good for him! I wish there were more writers who did it!

But the dialogue annoys the snot out of me. I just... can't.

See, whereas I'm rewatching Buffy and all I can think half the time is, "holy crap, this sounds exactly like the conversations I have with my friends."

I mean, firstly, not all of the quips, or even most of them, are clever. Sometimes they're dorky attempts at being clever that falls flat. Pretty much all of Willow's dialogue from the early seasons could be something I said to my friends.
