I love his shows (yep even Dollhouse), but I cannot with people who think he's some feminist hero.

He's not.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe he's not a hero, but he is a feminist and men are more likely to look at other men for their own opinions, so its better than nothing.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
He isn't a feminist. He is an ally. Feminists are female, if there is a male claiming to be a feminist then he is just an example of patriarchal entitlement demanding status within a movement that they assume they should have because male entitlement has made them think they are entitled to have a certain status and a seat at any table.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't agree. But ok. You know that feminism as a term was coined by a dude, right?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Reclaiming happened. Decades ago.

These days dudes are trying to make "feminist" become synonymous with "misandrist" and are muddying the waters as much as they can. That is why it is important that men accept their status as allies and not cause further problems by insisting on being feminists just because they feel slighted by not being allowed that label. It is just male entitlement that makes them think they are allowed to claim every title going.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
ARGH misandry. LOL.

Ok yeah i get your point, but men are capable of being feminist, especially if they are particularly "feminine" themselves. Equal rights and removing the social construction of masculinity and femininity benefits more than just females.

I feel kinda stupid for arguing for MEN in a feminist thread though, so lets just leave it at you're right.

Feminism is actually something that benefits a lot of subsets of men too. I think its possible for men to be feminist, because they are just as tired of "female behavior" being bad/weak/whatever as women are.

Feminism is still there for women, but it doesn't cut out men as a group to hate.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
And this is exactly why men have to become comfortable as just being allies. Otherwise male entitlement manifests as a believe they can call the shots and reap the benefits directly instead of it just being a side effect of lifting up women. Feminism is for women's benefits only. Men should not start claiming any ownership of the changes as it then stops being about women being uplifted.

Ah. You mean feminism as in superiority, not equality. Yeah, in that case, you're still wrong.

Men can view women as equal or superior without making it all about themselves.

.....nnnnnno. Feminists are people who believe women and men are fundamentally equal, that we are just as full and whole and complicated human beings as men are, that we are just as capable, and that it is fucking goddamn time we were treated as such. You don't have to be any particular gender to believe this, or even to do your part to fight for it.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
In terms of people arguing about what's sexist to women, I'll go with those who have lived its effects. That's what some people mean by "feminist" as opposed to "ally".

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Sociology 101 or did you attend a neofeminist meeting during freshman orientation?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, you again. Troll on.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
oh stahp. listen, if you're concerned about gender equality and recognize that women get the shaft and want to change that, you're a feminist.

can't with these tumblr type SJWs that refuse to call men feminists. hope you're a troll, bro

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with you, but why "tumblr type"? We see it as much here. Why not LJ type SJWs? I'm kind of sick of this lazy hatred of anything tumblr-related when the same things are rampant on this site and many others.

That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard and you are seriously NOT helping feminism by saying this kind of shit.

Are you an undercover MRA, because that's how bad you look right now

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Hooboy, somebody's been guzzling the Kool-Aid like there's no tomorrow.

Tip: regurgitating undigested chunks of feminist doctrine doesn't impress anyone. How about giving us some original thoughts on the subject?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Screw whether men are more likely to look at other men for opinions, I consider being a feminist to be an objectively good thing. Even if you don't do it perfectly! It's better than not doing it at all.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
it's only a problem if you have someone using the banner of feminism to deflect criticism

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
even if he's just creating strong(er) female characters and adding female roles to films to pretend to be a feminist that's better than NOT doing it.

Sort of like the converse argument about how comedians/writers/artists who make sexist jokes/stories/art say that they're not misogynists, they're just doing it for shock or what have you. The end result is either something that makes media a little bit better or a little bit worse.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think he's trying to be a feminist hero. I think he is simply trying to be an interesting and original writer. I think it's sad that if a man writes a story with a girl/woman lead, people think he's doing so to make a political statement rather he than only wanted to write a story a story with a girl/woman lead because that's how the story popped in his head.

If the roles were reverse, a woman writer wrote about a boy/man, no one would raise an eyebrow. I bet Rowling never got this crap.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
In the early days of the publications, a lot of radfems made a huge stink about Rowling's internalized misogyny. Not only did she have a boy as hero and name the books after him, but she also wrote Hermione as insufferable and ugly.

"(even Dollhouse)"

Wait, is Dollhouse supposed to be the one Whedon show everyone that loves Whedon hates?

Because Dollhouse is my favorite...
