I'm just happy to know there's someone else who doesn't watch his shows. It isn't like I haven't tried, they just don't do anything for me.

He is so overrated. Ever since Firefuck became the poster child for lost masterpiece he has been raved about. The only reason it is thought of as being so brilliant is because it wasn't on long enough for the concept of space western only with the good guys being the confederates after losing gettysburg to get stale. Which would have been only another few episodes. That and it was the show that was on when geeks noticed the trend with FOX early cancellations. If it had come back like Family Guy had, we'd all be calling it shit and making fun of the cast for trying to conceal the inherent racism in trying to make the former slave owners the symbols of freedom.

AYRT

I don't hate him or his work or his fans. His shows just don't do anything for me.

Y'know...I'm still not seeing the "inherent racism," shades of the Civil War aside.

The vibe came from the post-Civil War concept, true, but that's because it was a Western, and Westerns are almost always post-Civil War, usually featuring characters that wore the blue or the gray. But the overall setting was that of the technologically inferior underdogs having lost to a more well-armed empire. That is a setting we see all the freaking time.

Was the Civil War primarily about slavery? Hoo boy, yes. Yes it was. But to the individual soldiers on the homestead? Not so much. There were plenty of men (and women. Let's not forget the 400+ women who fought) who genuinely thought they were fighting not for slavery, but for their freedom, because at the time, the "United States" weren't exactly as "United" as all that, and they felt as though a foreign power was dictating what they could and couldn't do. The Confederates, like any other army, even the ones fighting on the Bad Side, were just people.

Which isn't even the point. Because in Firefly, the war had nothing to do with slavery and everything to do with governmental control of colonies. So, y'know, like a couple of other wars in history.

There was also the whole thing about having Chinese writing and words, but no Asian people visible. Yeah that didn't stink to high heaven at all.

Ayup. Sadly. I love Firefly for many reasons, but that is so fucked.

I don't know, OP, about your straw fans. I'm a fan, I've even got a signing off him, but I think he fetishises a certain kind of woman which leads to him writing about girly female superheroes he jerks off to. And he's sooooo whitey. Still like a lot of his stuff. I think he's funny and does character interactions well. Adored the Avengers film. It's okay to like problematic stuff if you acknowledge it, and I've talked to many other Whedon fans who acknowledge it.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that was weird. Even as a fan of the show, it was pretty apparent Kaylee and the Tams were written to be Chinese, and then for some reason... weren't cast that way.

Uh. At least there were some badass black people?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 11:03 am (UTC)(link)
Badass black people? You mean the magical negro preacher, the evil guy from the movie, or the white captain's loyal pet (despite her being more competent than the white captain in every regard, she was happy to metaphorically say yes massa to him)?

It was no less problematic with the other PoC than it was with the Chinese.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 08:47 am (UTC)(link)
Magical negro preacher? WTF, anon. Troll harder.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, this. I'm guessing most Firefly fans don't care, but how is it NOT racist to cherrypick all the neato parts of Chinese culture you like without the pesky need to you know, cast any Chinese people?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 09:34 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed, although I'm not entirely sure that, even as a director and writer, you are the only person making decisions when casting people.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah you do. Not as a writer, but the director absolutely. The casting director may put people there for you to see, but it's up to you.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Me neither. I'm not trying to hate on the dude, I just don't get why it's OMG THE MOST AWESOME GEEK GENIUS THING EVAR, etc. etc. I'm the right age group and everything. Oh, and I'm really, really tired of people going but but what about BtVS, you can't hate that! Well, no, I don't hate it. I just didn't like it enough to watch it.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I don't like or dislike his stuff. Well, except for Avengers Assemble because Thor and Loki bore me. But I don't hate on people for loving it or anything. The rest of his stuff I don't care about one way or the other.

you mean Avengers the movie, right?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Avengers was so underwhelming (finally watched a couple weeks ago!)

going by all the raving and ticket-sales records I was disappointed by the try-too-hard and color-by-the-lines action flick it ended up being

it wasn't... bad, it just wasn't as cool as I thought it was going to be (and clearly not as cool as it wanted to be, my goodness, that dialogue; fantastic acting, contrived writing)

Re: you mean Avengers the movie, right?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's what they're talking about. The Avengers was released as Avengers Assemble in the UK. Most of fandom just calls it Avengers or the Avengers because that's what it was called everywhere else but a lot of people in the UK who aren't in fandom call it Avengers Assemble.

that's kinda what happens when you wait until something has been hyped to tell and back before you watch it though

nayrt

I thought most of the same things and I saw it opening weekend. I did have some expectations going in that it didn't meet, but it didn't have to do with hype. It felt like the movie was trying too hard to be cool, or maybe it was trying to make up for Thor being disappointing so they could justify making a Thor sequel. And the dialogue was mostly one liners without anyone ever saying anything of substance so all of the Avengers came off like Tony Stark clones.

Yeah, there were some seriously funny lines, but Joss at times just stomped on everything with his need to be Joss Whedon. A lot of the quips were not in-character for the characters whose mouths they were put into, and nearly every scene with pathos got abruptly railroaded into comedy if it stayed serious for more than a minute. Ah well.

I'm with you, his shows do nothing for me at all and I don't get the love. My family and some of my friends all love his stuff.

I don't even think I can be bothered with his Much Ado about Nothing, I think it's starting really soon and I'm meh about going to see it .
