When you know what a word or phrase means, but you keep thinking it's something else

Does anyone else get this? It can be standard words or total neologisms. Like, I know "nonplussed" means surprised but I keep thinking of it as more like unimpressed or apathetic, just because of how it sounds. And I know "tumblr savior" is a filtering system, but my mental dialogue keeps inserting it in place of SJW, like "yeah, I'm sure all the ~tumblr saviors~ will be freaking out about misogyny /eyeroll".

Am I crazy or does this happen to others as well?

No examples that I can think of, but I love the term "tumblr savior" for SJWs.

Nonplussed was totally the one I thought of when I saw your subject line.

'Immaculate conception' is another. I get annoyed at how commonly its misused, but then the circumstances where people use it (conception without sex) is a thing that needs an idiom so much more than the real meaning (free from original sin). I find myself wanting to use it in that capacity.

It doesn't exactly overlap - doesn't cover it when you're discussing the pregnancy itself. I mean, one could probably go with 'virgin pregnancy'. But 'immaculate conception' is always there in the backround making faces, daring you to give in and misuse it.

There's an anon in #17 who does this with feminist. They seem to think it means being a woman who hates men.

Ambivalent. I always think it means to have negative feelings toward something even though I know that's not right.

I'm getting like this because I see it used that way so much in fic ); It's a coping mechanism for me when I see it on AO3 to assume they mean mildly amused and then be happily surprised if it turns out they used it correctly. That's much better for me than getting confused and then angry with 9 out of 10 Teen Wolf fics.
