Re: When you know what a word or phrase means, but you keep thinking it's something else
'Immaculate conception' is another. I get annoyed at how commonly its misused, but then the circumstances where people use it (conception without sex) is a thing that needs an idiom so much more than the real meaning (free from original sin). I find myself wanting to use it in that capacity.
