It's not just woobification that's a problem, people don't seem to get that the guy does not function like a normal human being. He sees other people like lesser life-forms; he does not have a conscience; he kills people like a farmer inured to killing chickens. He might become fond of a particular chicken over the other, but when dinner time comes, that chicken is still dead meat and the farmer sleeps peacefully that night.

So lines like this one from a recent fic I read -- Hannibal could enjoy sex for the typical reasons average people enjoyed it. It was a way to take care of one’s partner, a way to worship, and a way to be devoutly worshipped in return. -- just seem to me to be utterly missing the point. Hannibal Lecter does not give a shit about taking care of anyone or worshiping anyone, are you kidding me?

And I can just hear people howling about "I interpret the character differently!" but y'all: no. This show backs this up, the books more than back this up, the first three movies (Manhunter, Silence of the Lambs, Red Dragon) back this up, and I haven't seen the other two so can't comment on those. But in other words, the proof is right there.

Come on now. I know it's sexier to imagine the guy is more human than he is, but he's a soulless monster. The Word of God may be that he loves Will in his own way, but key words "in his own way," the way a man missing three limbs can dance in his own way.

No, he has a conscience. He just has his own sense of morals.

He helped a victim of rape in the third book as a psychiatrist, telling her it wasn't her fault, and when she ended up killing her rapist he publicly took responsibility for it.

He's only categorized as a "sociopath" for lack of a better term.

I would hardly call it "morals." He only helped Margot because he was trying to manipulate her into helping HIM get away from her crazy-pants pervert brother. And when it didn't work exactly the way he wanted, he resorted to cruelty (telling her he hoped her girlfriend got used to "taking the chocolate"). The essence was: Help me, or have fun watching your brother abuse your girlfriend for the rest of his life! He took responsibility for the crime because it was the only way he was going to be able to get away, and honestly, what was one more death at that point?

Lecter has a kind of code he lives by, but it's hardly a set of morals. He lives according to what satisfies himself. He is not self-sacrificing. There is not a single character in those books he wouldn't destroy if they stood between him and what he wanted -- not Clarice, and definitely not Will Graham.

Although he has no love for Will Graham in the books or films, you should consider reading ALL the books because it sounds like you haven't read Hannibal or Hannibal Rising.

I hate woobification, but I think you're missing crucial elements to his character and trying to compare him to a real life sociopath. Lecter is a fictional character, not something that you can compare with real life examples. He is a monster, but he clearly cares about Clarice and sees more than a piece of meat.
