It gets better and hotter between them, imo--but I can TOTALLY get behind Kaylee/Mal and Simon/Jayne.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who came out of Firefly thinking Mal and Kaylee made a better pairing than their respective canon love interests. They seemed to connect better. Mal treated her with respect, unlike Inara (although I know that an important aspect of his character development would have been overcoming his prejudice), and Kaylee's character was more...interesting around him, for lack of a better word. They had a lot of un-forced, genuinely cute interactions too (forehead kiss!).

When I first watched the series, I actually thought Mal & Kaylee were together for several seconds during the pilot, and it kinda colored my view of them for a while. I love their little sis/big bro relationship, but I could see that working, maybe. And the Jayne/Simon stuff was deliberate, wasn't it? I seem to recall hearing that their UST was actually meant to be canon. Or maybe I just spend too much time on Tumblr; IDK.
