I get where you're coming from, but they're both really really pretty, so I'm okay with them as a couple.

Note up front, I'm primarily a m/m slash shipper in my primary fandom and in most things I follow even casually but not Firefly. I have two real ships there-

I always shipped Kaylee/Inara; Mal was just too awful to Inara and there's this one scene... *shivers* with Kaylee and Inara in canon, wow.

And I hardly ever ship canon couples, and almost never het, but goddamn if I don't ship Zoe/Wash to death. They're the most adorable couple ever.

I find poor Simon too almost cold to ship him with anyone. It's like all his emotions are tied into saving River and there's not much left of him outside that.

I adore Mal to pieces as a person but honestly every time he's nasty to Inara I want to BE Zoe and smack him hard. Or better, Kaylee, cos she'd do it, Zoe's got too much respect for the chain of command.

And Jayne doesn't need anyone, he's got Vera. *grins*

It grows. It's mostly Kaylee crushing on the doctor, and there wasn't quite enough to really establish a relationship imo but the friendship does get some development later.

Yeah, I don't see it. Mostly their interactions were Simon failing at saying the right thing and Kaylee getting offended, then some sort of make up? It happened like every other episode.

Maybe more happens in the movie, but I don't remember it that well, so I can't really say.

A lot of it shows up later, tbh. If you're only a few episodes in, then you'll probably see it by the time you finish watching the show.

And really, ship_manifesto proves that there is, apparently, evidence enough to ship literally every single character with the others, in pretty much all combinations (I ignore this and go with everyone/everyone).

I honestly thought it was mostly one-sided until the Big Damn Movie, so I'm pretty much with you there. They did bring a little more chemistry in the film, but I still find Kaylee/Jayne (or Kaylee/Inara) and Mal/Simon hotter. (That I find Kaylee intensely annoying as a character doesn't help. I suspect there was character development she was supposed to get in later seasons that we never got to.)

Same, pretty much in all aspects. Kaylee/Jayne (and Mal/Simon) both work better for me in terms of pairing archetypes. Which is kinda funny as from what I've read, Jayne/Simon was supposed to be the pairing that got the gay subtext but even that just does nothing for me. Kaylee/Simon though? Meh. It's just a pairing type I've really got no interest in: warm-hearted country girl who's outgoing and enthusiastic and in her element matching up with a cooler, more reserved, fish-out-of-water richboy who keeps putting his foot in his mouth? It's just a trope I find boring.

...Weirdly I think I would have liked it more had Simon been the girl and Kaylee the boy. Huh.

I didn't find Kaylee intensely annoying but she kind of left me cold outside of most of her interactions with Mal and Jayne. Oh and Inara, I could have shipped her and Inara easily, maybe because Inara is also warm and she's well spoken? I also think Kaylee was supposed to have more development and I wish that we'd seen more of it. I guess I also found it a bit frustrating that Kaylee's character was so often used to set up Simon Accidentally Being A Jerk So Kaylee Is Hurt instead of really acting as a character in her own right who could stand separately and on her own instead of being a prop for Simon to work against.

Come to think of it, I actually liked Kaylee pretty much whenever she wasn't interacting with Simon. It's just she had so much interaction with Simon.

I do think it gets a little bit more to get going; some of the moments in Jaynestown, for example, are really really cute for Kaylee/Simon, and I really love how awkward they are in Safe.

Kaylee/Simon is never going to be a huge, epic romance or anything, but if you want a ship that's more cute and adorable, they're definitely a good one.

I've wanted to watch this shoe for a long time and I'm currently half way through the first episode but I'm already bored stiff. When does it start getting good?

Halfway through the first episode is when River appears, so it's all downhill from there.

For me, it was good from the get-go. Maybe it's just not your thing?

If you still really want to give it a try, though, skip ahead to "Out of Gas" and "Ariel." Those are big episodes in terms of getting people hooked. If you still don't dig it after that, then I'd say you can be reasonably certain that it just doesn't work for ya.

I'm on Jaynestown now, and still not seeing it. All Safe did was solidify my interest in Jayne/Simon.

I also want to ship Zoe and Mal but I can't do that to Wash :O

Meh, I'm right there with you. I love Firefly, but Kaylee/Simon was sort of my least favorite thing. They felt an awful lot like: "Say, you two are compatible in age and orientation! You should be a couple!"

But then Simon is...eh, Simon.

IDK if I see strong 'chemistry' (not like "wow the sexual tension is amazing!") but I do think they make a good couple. Simon is a once-burned idealist, so it makes sense to me that amongst bitter ex-soldiers, and merca and thieved and whatnot, he would find Kaylee's sweetnes and wholesomeness to be a breath of fresh air. Also, he's super dense, so the fact that she is honest and transparent makes him appreciate her even more (rather than someone reserved like Zoe or sophisticated and enigmatic like Inara). For me there's less need for Kaylee to have someone like Simon, but I figure she liked him first because he was so damn pretty, then grew to love him for his compassion, his love for his sister, and the fact that he still has that idealism to him, although it's all beaten down.

Also, they're young and attractive, and Kaylee ain't had nothing twixt her nethers 'tweren't run on batteries for a year and Simon's been to busy being a young genius doctor to get some.

I think they're cute but it's no issue if you don't. Tbh I think there's a lot of leeway for shipping anyone/anyone in Firefly, and I'm not even a multishipper.

I fully admit to shipping almost everyone/everyone in this show and I think Simon/Kaylee is adorable but it's no big deal if you don't. I ship Mal/Simon, Jayne/Kaylee, Mal/Kaylee and Jayne/Simon, though each to a different extent.
