Experimental Physicist (Lenard), Theoretical Physicist (Sheldon - In it only to get his Nobel prize, not for something as titchy as tenure, He would happily work at the cheesecake factory if it would get him recognition as the great scientific mind of his generation), Astro Physicist (Raj) And engineer (Howard).

Those are their fields. I think OP is more asking what their positions are - are they professors? grad students? post-docs? etc.

Well, at least Sheldon teaches. It's been mentioned more than once that if they all trying for tenure at one point when a teacher died or something? Just because it doesn't show them teaching doesn't mean they aren't teaching.

goddamn it, my computer ate part of the response. It's been mentioned more than once that if they mess up Sheldon punishes them by making them take his class. And weren't they all trying for tenure at one point?

I always assumed that if Sheldon's friends had to take his class, it wasn't one he was teaching to people who wanted to be there and paid to be there, but rather one he designed for his friends to instruct them on the finer points of Sheldon.

Lesson 1: Don't touch his food.
Lesson 2: Don't touch the thermostat.
Etc...

It bothers me too...

Leonard and Sheldon do teach - they don't seem to have regular classes, sure, but that can be chalked up to the story just ignoring them (as Sheldon and Leonard no doubt do as much as they can), and writing grants would be boring as hell, so, again, ignored (except when they can get funny out of it, which they have once or twice, mostly by ignoring the 'writing' part).

Howard is a working engineer, attached to JPL.

Raj...I don't know.

Raj works on a thesis thingy, because a couple of seasons ago he was close to loosing his grant (job?) because he hadn't found any evidence for his work, so research mostly? But everyone in an University gets pushed into teaching at some point, so he might also teach a couple of classes.

I'm pretty sure they all teach classes when not doing their own personal research/lab time. It's been mentioned in a few throwaway lines but I don't think ever explicitly stated or shown.

Leonard and Sheldon mostly just do experiments and Leonard goes on research trips, we have seen Sheldon teach at least one class so one assumes he teaches more than just that class, Leonard probably teaches too, both probably as guest lectures not being in charge of any subjects on their own.

Howard builds stuff as an engineer and Raj is also a researcher, so they probably teach less than Leonard and Sheldon

I assume Leonard, Sheldon and Raj all have a split position between Teaching and Research, with more on Research than Teaching. Howard is probably only an engineer, but he might teach too as people with MA's are qualified to teach.

Leonard, Sheldon and Raj was recently in the running for a Tenure position, so neither of them have one.

They all also publish stuff in Journals and so on quite often.

Standard sitcom rules apply. Characters have jobs. They go to these jobs but unless something "hilarious" happens during a specific part of the job, you won't see it. *shrugs*

Yes, exactly.

It's the same with bathroom visits. The characters are human. They go to the bathroom. But we only see it if it's relevant to the story being told.

Oddly enough, bathroom visits have probably been just as relevant to the story as the characters' jobs.

Speaking of jobs on the Big Bang Theory - I've only seen a few episodes, and it really bugs me that they have scenes with one character waitressing at the Cheesecake Factory... in a restaurant that looks nothing like the Cheesecake Factory. C'mon, show, if you can't get something like the interior of a chain restaurant right, what can you be trusted with?

lol engineering is not like other science fields, as much as sheldon makes fun of wolowitz for not being a doctor, i highly doubt he's just a research assistant

I highly doubt Howard is just a research assistant. He designed a toilet for the International Space Station, among other NASA projects, and eventually got to go into space himself. He's at least a little important.

This is a great secret, and made me laugh out loud. Plus, that's going to bug me now too...
