I for one find Greek mythology very problematic and sideeye anyone who claims to enjoy it.

Turning Hercules into a movie was the worst thing Disney ever did.

It's chock full of rape, for starters. Zeus is so dead-set on raping people he'll change his shape just to make the rape easier. Including animals. And it isn't just Zeus either. Apollo got rapey. So did Hades.

It's also terribly eurocentric. If you know about Hercules but don't know what I'm talking about when I mention Asansi or Coyote you're probably a racist.

Nope, not at all. But I'm not about to call someone racist for not knowing certain mythological or historical figures. I'm also not going to side eye anyone for enjoying mythology or history with problematic aspects.

I mean, you're right about Zeus. But not knowing Asansi and Coyote doesn't make me racist. Unenducated or uninformed maybe, but "racist" seems a bit harsh. What culture do they come from? It would be interesting to know their stories too. I love mythology, so if I know ehat to look for in classes next semster that would be great!

Anansi is West African, while Coyote was a figure in a few western Native American cultures.

But I'd contend that ignorance is no excuse. Your ignorance of nonwestern mythology combined with your love of a genre more problematic than Game of Thrones makes you a racist rape-apologizer. If you're old enough to type on a message board, you're old enough to know this on your own.

I wouldn't say that the general public who know Hercules but don't know Anansi or Coyote are racist. It's that the media and all are racist for only focusing on white people's gods.

Not really, not in my opinion. Like, people know Hercules because of Disney and all, right? But Disney hasn't made a movie about spider gods in my experience. The average person can hardly be called racist for that.

But if someone is into mythology and googles stuff about Hercules and inevitably stumbles across stuff about other gods in other cultures and still ignores their existence, I'd say that's fairly racist.
