Greek mythology is a lot more fun when imagine people 2500 years ago being in a fandom for various legendary figures ;D

...You know that's gotta be what happened. Half of Greek myth reads like fanfiction.

'He turned into a swan and impregnated her? What is wrong with you?'
'Just wait! In the next part, her daughter's beauty starts a war!'

Perhaps someday we'll find carvings etched into walls that, when translated, boil down to an extensive argument about whether or not Helen of Troy was a Mary Sue.

A substantial number of Greek myths were passed down to us through retellings by Romans, who didn't take it all that seriously. Which is to say: fanfiction.

Hell, the Aeneid is fanfiction start to finish. (Also not Greek.)

That's pretty much Greek Mythology. And I love it!

I for one find Greek mythology very problematic and sideeye anyone who claims to enjoy it.

Turning Hercules into a movie was the worst thing Disney ever did.

Hercules movie aside, why do you find it problematic/side-eye? I always thought they were such interesting stories! :)

It's chock full of rape, for starters. Zeus is so dead-set on raping people he'll change his shape just to make the rape easier. Including animals. And it isn't just Zeus either. Apollo got rapey. So did Hades.

It's also terribly eurocentric. If you know about Hercules but don't know what I'm talking about when I mention Asansi or Coyote you're probably a racist.

Not just Greek mythology but works for all history/mythology.

I was a classics minor. I would've majored in it if my small college offered that.

I was being as out there as possible. If anyone was actually offended, I'm very sorry about that. I was trying to be cartoonish.

The fact that some of you thought I was seriously saying you can't like Greek mythology says more about fan culture than I want to know.

For once I agree with you. I can't believe people fell for that.

Here's the thing, you commented with a very straight forward statement. It was a strange statement but it wasn't really "out there", sadly. People replied politely and asked why you said that, you went on to call them racists and rape apologists and rape fans. I don't see the humor in any of that. I don't see how anyone is automatically supposed to know that you're being "funny". I don't see why you'd post that and then get confused when people reply and try to begin a conversation. And I don't see why you kept replying with more insults when it was obvious people were taking you seriously when you didn't mean to be. Why not just own up to the fact you were trolling? Why go on to call people racist and rapist?

... I lol'd. Mainly that people were actually taking it seriously and talking about how problematic Greek mythology was. I spot a bunch of bitter anons who got trolled. lol

what irritates me about it is that yeah, you were joking. but by using the title 'rapist' or 'rape apologist' as part of your joke, you diminish those words in their actual meaning and proper use. by using the words that are supposed to be for me to explain how culture shits on me for having been raped as part of your joke, you weaken my hold and other people's interaction with those words. I know I'm going to get jumped on for saying this and told 'wah wah' et al but come on, Chard. I don't mind trolling, but please don't make it something that is viscerally uncomfortable for some of us.

That's pretty much how mythology works! :D

(Also, Greek mythology is fun as hell.)
