Guys. Guys.

[personal profile] chardmonster 2013-06-13 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I was a classics minor. I would've majored in it if my small college offered that.

I was being as out there as possible. If anyone was actually offended, I'm very sorry about that. I was trying to be cartoonish.

The fact that some of you thought I was seriously saying you can't like Greek mythology says more about fan culture than I want to know.

For once I agree with you. I can't believe people fell for that.

F!S c'mon now.

Re: Guys. Guys.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Likewise. It was pretty obvious from the start and got more and more over-the-top as it progressed.

DA, ditto to the pair above me. I "got it" too (and LOLed) but eh, some people like different forms of humour.

Re: Guys. Guys.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Or it says more about your failed attempt at humor.

You likely never even attempted to have a sense of one, so I was doomed from the start.

Re: Guys. Guys.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Here's the thing, you commented with a very straight forward statement. It was a strange statement but it wasn't really "out there", sadly. People replied politely and asked why you said that, you went on to call them racists and rape apologists and rape fans. I don't see the humor in any of that. I don't see how anyone is automatically supposed to know that you're being "funny". I don't see why you'd post that and then get confused when people reply and try to begin a conversation. And I don't see why you kept replying with more insults when it was obvious people were taking you seriously when you didn't mean to be. Why not just own up to the fact you were trolling? Why go on to call people racist and rapist?

The insults were an attempt to make it clear that I was trolling.

Do you actually know people who'd call you a racist for not knowing about an obscure (in the US) African spider god? Or a rape apologist for enjoying ancient myths? I've only seen people like that in tumblr reblogs where they're being mocked.

I almost typed something in the second comment about Zeus's turning into a shower of coins to impregnate a woman as an unconscionable defense of capitalism, but erased it. I should've left it in there. It would have made my point clearer.

I'm sorry that I wasn't more blatant. For the record, I did think I was being blatant.

Riley probably would.

They own up to the fact they're trolling like 90% of the time EVERY DAY. And mind, I don't find it funny either, but by this point people going out of their way to respond to her just because they think they can say something super clever is becoming as annoying as the trolling itself.

I hate trolling of this kind because it could potentially stifle genuine discussion, but I don't see how anyone who's familiar with current fandom atmosphere and SJW trends could believe she was being serious.

I'm here off and on and I usually avoid chardmonster because I know they like to be inflammatory, but honestly they are usually more flamboyant or obvious than today. I thought it was just one of those random out-there opinions and thought it would be an interesting conversation (I am one of the anons that asked her to elaborate). I know that I'm pretty bad at understanding tone via text but things like this just make me want to not even try and just stop commenting all together. Which makes me sad.

What part of calling someone a rapefanboy while using phrases like problematic and sideye isn't flamboyant?

Re: Guys. Guys.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
You failed. And I especially like how you are now blaming US for your failure. You've said some outlandish things in the past. How were we to surmise that THIS time you were being "flamboyant"?

Own your failure. We are not to blame.

I'm the same way. I am really bad at telling who is trolling and who just has different unpopular opinions. A lot of the secrets where people auto call troll I never would have guessed at. Which is why I'm 90% a lurker.

Re: Guys. Guys.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
I can't believe I'm actually agreeing with Chard on something but yeah, it was pretty damn obvious.

On the other hand, huge swaths of internet fell for forfuturereferenceonly before they fessed up, and I thought their trolling was way more blatant than this...

Yeah, definitely. Sorry.

Regardless of how obvious you were being, people probably responded precisely because it was so off the wall, but also straightforward and unfunny.

No matter how you try to spin your bullshit the point is came off as malicious and gross. Just shut up.

Actually, I'm sorry my original comment came out so abrasive. I wasn't in the right mood to be commenting, and I didn't mean to lash out quite that meanly.

Re: Guys. Guys.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
... I lol'd. Mainly that people were actually taking it seriously and talking about how problematic Greek mythology was. I spot a bunch of bitter anons who got trolled. lol

Re: Guys. Guys.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 08:53 am (UTC)(link)
what irritates me about it is that yeah, you were joking. but by using the title 'rapist' or 'rape apologist' as part of your joke, you diminish those words in their actual meaning and proper use. by using the words that are supposed to be for me to explain how culture shits on me for having been raped as part of your joke, you weaken my hold and other people's interaction with those words. I know I'm going to get jumped on for saying this and told 'wah wah' et al but come on, Chard. I don't mind trolling, but please don't make it something that is viscerally uncomfortable for some of us.
