Being The Tech-Person

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
We had this thread before, but I just need to complain.

At my job, I've somehow become the Kindle Tech-Girl. I had one first, and my colleagues saw it and liked it and went out and bought their own. These colleagues are twice my age and only speak a language that I can just about understand, but can in no way communicate something this complicated.

But I swear it's endless "NONNY, could you tell me how to turn this things off?"

"NONNY honey, can you show me how to get books off this foreign website? Wrong type of file? I just want the book on my kindle, how do I do it? But this thing you explained already, that applies here? But how can it?"

"Oh you have to change the file, can you do that? Take your time, then show me, can you? It's so easy!"

"NONNY, my kindle is frozen, there has to be a way to magically lift all the non-amazon books that were on it and install them onto a new one, right? You can do that, right?"

I ditched my own kindle for an ipad recently and I never want to see one again.

(At this point I should note that my work is the type that has a lot of lulls, so yes we have time for this.)

I'm so trepidatious about pissing anyone off (our office is already pretty tense for different reasons) that I never feel I can say I no unless I absolutely can't do anything for the problem. It's just I SO tired of being thought of as this magical person who can do anything with technology, especially stuff that can't be done, period. And I am shit at teaching anyone anything, let alone teaching people something in a language they don't really understand and having to keep repeating and repeating and repeating myself.

Very very frustrating.

Today (I work at a phone booth), I had a lady come in and show me her phone, which randomly started updating in the middle of the night and left a light on for several hours.

It updated and everything, I checked. There wasn't really a problem, they just wanted to make sure something hadn't gone awry.

(Also "What can you tell me about the Samsung Galaxy S4?" "Do you sell batteries?" "Do I look good in this shirt?")

Never ever ever let anyone know that you have any sort of tech savvy ever, otherwise you'll have to fucking leave in the middle of fucking Top Gear to go over to your mom's coworker's place on the other fucking side of town and crawl up her laptop's asshole to clean out the five hundred viruses and spyware that accumulated despite installing GOOD anti-virus software, adblock, etc. and explaining in no uncertain terms what not to do when browsing the internet because nobody ever fucking listens and the whole thing is a broken piece of shit from never being shut down properly or cleaned up and it smells like cat pee and the keys are sticky and alfsdjadfpjasdfljkfuckal;dfsjalasdflagasdfavotenaderjapgasgaosfdpasdfpaf[pweapfspshitlobsters

In the middle of Top Gear? How dare they?

The most annoying thing is when people (mostly my parents call me) and say "the thing isn't working", they both have laptops and iPads so first I have to figure out which they are on, then I have to figure out what they are trying to do, and they can't understand that I don't know what they are trying to do, usually it is my mothers Facebook or my fathers email that is doing something, but still why can't they say "I am trying to send a picture on facebook and it is not working" instead of saying the thing? Seriously all the time I have wasted trying to figure out what the hell they are doing...

sorry about that...

...Okay, how is that possible? I mean, my parents are not exactly computer-savvy but they do know about the dangers of downloading & clicking stuff from the net, especially if it's the antivirus(not!) types.

That's my day job, and I hear ya! I obviously don't mind it at work, for things that are at work, but the number of people who ask me about their home computers, their personal phones, whatever. Ugh.

Ugh, sounds like helping my Mom do shit on the computer that I taught myself to do when I was twelve.

Oh, my family and I are the same when it comes to the large printer-scanner that we have in our house. My mom and dad (and I) need to use it because of their jobs, but when it comes to installing and guiding them for the first few weeks I have to be one that does it.

Some reason though, I can never feel mad at them for doing this, especially with my mother. I think it's because I care for her too much. :)

Well, that and the fact that both my parents can pick up things very fast.

I'm not even particularly tech-savvy but because my parents are completely useless with technology they think I'm some sort of magician. I have to do everything for them, tech wise.

Your situation sounds much, much worse and I'm sorry. :(

could you maybe make a manual of the more common "problems" and "how to's", print many copies and pass them around, or at least have one at hand?

would that help? (this really depends on your coworkers; I know this sort of thing actually works for people who prefer following written instructions they have at hand, but others wouldn't like it)

It would only work if it was translated into their language, and I can hardly read in it myself (it uses a non-latin alphabet). To their credit my coworkers have occasionally tried to write things down as I explain, but with the language barrier they never get very far and write down the instructions wrong. I end up having to do everything anyway.

oh :(

well, it is a possible project to work on as you master the language, or maybe if you get someone nice and patient with tons of free time to help you do it

My sympathies.

On a related note: in-laws who use their computer once every other week to check e-mail, understand and appreciate them about as well as they do quantum mechanics, and hence frown upon anyone who spends real actual money on a GOOD PC instead of just grabbing the first $299 Wal-Mart POS they see.
