I'm guessing OP included that line because otherwise F!S would have blown up at them for being such a monster to begrudge their nephew his birthday and blame him for the family's assholery. And given the reaction this secret has gotten, it wasn't a misplaced concern.

I doubt OP was expecting their brother and sister-in-law to throw them a birthday party. But they may have been expecting said brother and sister-in-law not to think, "Hey, let's have our son's birthday party on THIS day, since there's obviously nothing else important about that day that we'll be eclipsing!"

And seriously, twenty-one is the cutoff? I guess I should stop baking my mother a cake and singing to her every year, then. She stopped having birthdays before I was even born.

People aren't always complete sticklers for celebrating on the exact day when they throw a birthday party--they pick a day that's convenient for hosts and guests. It's bizarre that this day should be off-limits because it happens to be the OP's birthday.

And you can throw a birthday party for someone you love no matter how old they are. But 21 is definitely the cutoff date for being disgruntled that nobody is making a big deal out of your birthday.

DA. Agreed. After that point you should throw the party yourself, if you absolutely want to have one. Of course you can throw a birthday party for other people, but you can't really demand them to do anything for yours when you are an adult.

It's not "bizarre" to find it in poor taste to pick someone else's birthday for your celebration that doesn't have to be on any specific day, since that would trample all over the other person's birthday. If it's a matter of wanting to hold the party on a weekend because the kid's birthday is midweek, pick the weekend on the other side of the birthday.

I think you need to realize that your whole "adult birthdays don't matter" thing is not a universal cultural standard and that people who don't adhere to it are not objectively wrong for not doing so. Wanting someone to acknowledge or care about your birthday does not make you a child or a whiner.

IDK about you but "no one else at the get together being told it was my actual day of birth" is pretty clear to me. They were ignored. And that's rude. It doesn't take any effort to at least wish someone a happy birthday.
