I haven't seen the show, but it strikes me that Moffat being good at writing soaps and sitcoms (or so everyone used to say) is why he's not good at writing SF and mysteries. Even when he's got a readymade "cheat sheet" for Sherlock. (Which they tossed into the trash because they wanted to remake the Rathbone pastiches, but never told anyone that right up front. But don't get me started.)

NA might actually agree with you. I was turned off by Jekyll when it first aired on BBC America (IIRC), way before Sherlock and Doctor Who were huge for Moffat.

Could you elaborate? I have Jekyll on my hard-drive but I've not watched it yet, and I've been debating about if I even want to once I realized Moffat wrote it.

First anon here.

I watched the pilot and a couple episodes after that (this was before Moffat hit it big or before I had a clue who he was, same diff I guess), and it's essentially the same problem he's had all the way through: Innovative idea, good initial execution, poor to no follow-through, and that's how I felt by the time the third episode rolled around, so I dropped it.

DA

I think Jekyll suffers from the same problems I see in a lot of Moffat's work: he is quite good at setting up great mysteries, but he's not so good at resolving them. I'm not going to spoil it for you in case you decide you want to watch it, but let's just say that the resolution to the whole plot in Jekyll made me go "WTF". Loud enough to scare the neighbours.
Plus, some very inconcistent characterisation and misogyny.

I'd still say it's worth taking a look at, because the acting is incredibly brilliant.

I still remember people throwing a fit about him tweeting spoilers and his response was along the lines of "But it's from a book published 100 years ago." I laughed hysterically because A) he really seemed to think Sherlock fans are Sherlock Holmes fans and B) the small percentage of Sherlock fans who are also Sherlock Holmes fans had long since figured out that he wasn't following ACD's work or characterizations.

Your strike-through is possibly the truest thing ever written.
