The lack of hate is just because people think Sherlock and Doctor Who are the only things Moffat's ever done.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
IA. Imagine all the Tumblrs/essays that would come out if more people knew he wrote Coupling, Jekyll or Press Gang.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Basically this ^

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Or because those are the ones people have watched. I know shit about this show, dude.

I have to say I'm kind of torn in regards to Coupling. I'm not a Moffat fan by any means, but I really liked Coupling when I watched it in high school.

Wonder how I'd feel about it now...

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It held up for me really well but of course YMMV.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen the show, but it strikes me that Moffat being good at writing soaps and sitcoms (or so everyone used to say) is why he's not good at writing SF and mysteries. Even when he's got a readymade "cheat sheet" for Sherlock. (Which they tossed into the trash because they wanted to remake the Rathbone pastiches, but never told anyone that right up front. But don't get me started.)

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
NA might actually agree with you. I was turned off by Jekyll when it first aired on BBC America (IIRC), way before Sherlock and Doctor Who were huge for Moffat.

Could you elaborate? I have Jekyll on my hard-drive but I've not watched it yet, and I've been debating about if I even want to once I realized Moffat wrote it.

I still remember people throwing a fit about him tweeting spoilers and his response was along the lines of "But it's from a book published 100 years ago." I laughed hysterically because A) he really seemed to think Sherlock fans are Sherlock Holmes fans and B) the small percentage of Sherlock fans who are also Sherlock Holmes fans had long since figured out that he wasn't following ACD's work or characterizations.

IAWTC 100%

I'm not in the fandom...

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
but a lot of people I know are and that was the most fun I ever had watching my tumblr dash :)

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
Your strike-through is possibly the truest thing ever written.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Press Gang still holds up, and I think Lynda is an incredible character. When I was having a tough time in high school, I'd think, "Be like Lynda".

NOW GET OUT OF MY NEWSROOM

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Sarah is a great character as well.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I still love it and I make no apologies for that. And Press Gang. Of course I don't see Moffat as the devil so that might have something to do with it.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
If you over-analyze you can make anything seem problematic. Which is pretty much what happens with Who. Dial out all the RTD-has-left rage and the SJWs who hate everything and you'll see all those tenuous justifications falling apart. The "problems" of Dr Who are all a house of cards, it is if-this-then-that-leads-to-the-other-if-this-again. Anti-Moffat rage all relies on mutual support.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Well, there's also the other problematic element of his writing. IE, he is really bad at writing.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Well that's a matter of opinion. Not everyone agrees.

This, exactly. SJWs like to label anything that doesn't fit their checklist of what's acceptable (no non-white, non-straight, non-cis person can ever do anything wrong, especially if they're female and your bad guys can only be white straight men - which is another kind of problem in itself) as 'problematic'. This is because most of them are kids who don't actually understand how stereotypes and tropes actually work, and that if you avoid one you can risk falling into the other. Not to mention, by only letting 'x' type of character act in 'y' way, you just create new stereotypes.

SJWs are a clusterfuck doing more harm than good to actual social justice, and I'll be glad when this particular fad - and it is a fad - is over.

I also think Moffat's trolling them all, but that's another matter.

I wouldn't worry about it. It's ok to like something other people don't. Especially when it's the Who fandom deciding what is and isn't acceptable. I'd never go by them.

I love Coupling.
I may be an odd one though, as I've only ever seen him in that and in Pirates.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't enjoyed his Doctor Who episodes, but I LOVE LOVE LOVE Coupling.

I think it's a little problematic, re: the females, but I'm sorry. Jack Davenport plus a Shakespearean speech on why there should be a lock on the bathroom door? Hilarity.

Just sneaking in to also toss in my love of Coupling.

(Though I totally stopped watching once Jeff was put on a bus. IT IS NOT COUPLING WITHOUT JEFF, LIES LIES)
