Have you read Wide Sargasso Sea (Jean Rhys)? It's a prequel, from the perspective of Bertha/Antoinette, his first wife. I read Jane Eyre first, liked it well enough, even though Rochester was a twat, but now that I've read Wide Sargasso Sea I can't stand Rochester at all. Maybe you'll like it?

SECONDED. Wide Sargasso Sea is amazing. It will make you see everything in Jane Eyre in a new light, and it might actually inspire you to finish the book just out of a sense of morbid curiosity and poetic justice.

THIRDED. I read Wide Sargasso Sea on my mum's recommendation after we had a long conversation about all the things wrong with Jane Eyre, and I loved it so damn much.

Repeating everyone else's recommendation. It's a great book.

Came here to say this too! One of my favourite books EVER. Also the reason for my fervent Rochester hateboner, lol. Antoinetta is so real and vibrant and tragic and alive. The writing in that book gives me chills no matter how often I pick it up.

Seconding the recs for WSS! It's an amazing book and Antoinette a truly fascinating character.
I would also suggest reading The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, by Charlotte Brontë's younger sister Anne. The heroine gets married to a "Byronic" type, realizes he is a gross, abusive asshole and escapes from him, building an healthier relationship with another man. Anne died very young and Charlotte insisted that the book was not republished, because it was too "scandalous".
